Jell-O, the wiggly and jiggly sweet, vintage treat is the perfect summer dessert or quick snack on the go; but it can be used for so much more. Try some of these surprising and fun uses.
1. Make a flavorful, moist cake
For a surprisingly moist cake use a box of yellow or white cake mix and prepare as directed. After the cake has completely cooled, use a fork and poke the cake in a series of lines making sure to cover most, but not all of the cake’s surface. Pour your favorite prepared Jell-O mixture (in its liquid state) over the cake and place in the refrigerator over night. The next day, top the cake with whipped topping and sprinkles. Cut the cake in squares and you’ll see the cool color of the Jell-O flavor that you used –red yellow, pink, green, orange or blue!
2. Dye your hair
Because Jell-O contains natural food dyes it can be used to dye lighter shades of hair for an alternative look. Lasting about 7-10 washes, Jell-O is a fun alternative to at-home hair dyes. Using a separate bowl for each color that you plan to use, mix one packet of Jell-O with hair conditioner and mix until smooth. Apply petroleum jelly to forehead, ears and neck and then apply the Jell-O dye mixture to your whole head or sections. Wrap hair in a warm towel and let it set for at least one hour. Rinse thoroughly and enjoy your new ‘do. Perfect for a funky party or Halloween hair.
3. Make Marshmallows
Marshmallows are usually made with unflavored gelatin and since Jell-O is flavored gelatin, it’s relatively easy to make marshmallows with your favorite flavor of Jell-O. Take your favorite homemade marshmallow recipe and swap out the unflavored gelatin envelopes for your favorite flavor of Jell-O for a spongy, sweet, homemade treat.
