The 4th of July is almost here, and you know what that means—throwing an epic barbecue, complete with 4th of July games, and catching the best fireworks display in your area. Or maybe it means planning a 4th of July weekend getaway with your besties…or ditching the crowds and watching a patriotic movie on your own. Of course, there’s no one way to celebrate America’s big birthday, and on your day off, you deserve to do exactly what makes you happy. What is that, exactly? Your zodiac sign can help you figure that out.

“The zodiac gives us a great deal of insight into how a person unwinds,” says astrologist Andrea Scalisi. “A sign’s element, ruling planet, and modality will paint a remarkably accurate picture of its ideal celebration experience.”

Although each of us is unique, our sun sign helps shape our personality and the types of activities that tickle our fancy. You might be outgoing or reserved, laid-back or more regimented, intellectual or sentimental, and that will influence your definition of the perfect holiday weekend. Your rising sign can further tweak your idea of fun. From backyard bashes blasting patriotic songs to quiet solo time by the lake, these are the best ways to celebrate the 4th of July, according to your zodiac sign.

Aries (March 21–April 19)

The ideal celebration for this fire sign involves something active, high energy, and maybe a tad competitive—but nothing fancy. “Aries are straight shooters who like to be in charge,” Scalisi explains. “So, instead of waiting around for an invitation this July 4th, Aries will be much happier hatching a plan themselves.” That said, people born under this sign typically don’t have the patience for more elaborate party planning. They’d prefer to ring in America’s birthday with a simple backyard barbecue, filled with plenty of fun outdoor games to keep them entertained.

Taurus (April 20–May 20)

“Taurus is a grounded earth sign, but it’s also under the influence of Venus,” Scalisi notes. This means that Taureans are romantics at heart who enjoy the finer things, and they’re also major foodies. With that in mind, a Taurus will likely want to skip the big 4th of July bash and instead celebrate with a luxurious, indulgent, and intimate picnic. “Taurus will love putting on a great spread, popping a few bottles, and sprawling out on plush blankets,” says Scalisi. “An out-of-the-way spot with beautiful scenery and a nice view of the fireworks will allow Taurus to sit back, sip, and connect with their partner or besties.”

Gemini (May 21–June 20)

According to Scalisi, Geminis love a good time—and the 4th is the perfect celebratory opportunity for them. “This air sign is ruled by Mercury, which makes them intellectual, expressive, and curious,” Scalisi explains, adding that Geminis are always looking for a good reason to get out of their routines. Her suggestion? A spontaneous road trip with a few of their favorite people. This will appeal to Gemini’s sense of adventure and love of new experiences. “The destination doesn’t even matter,” she says. “Meeting people, exploring different places, and trying new things will keep Gemini’s mind stimulated.”

Cancer (June 21–July 22)

“Cancer is going to feel most comfortable in familiar surroundings over the holiday,” says Scalisi. A water sign that’s ruled by the moon, Cancer is one of the more intuitive and emotional signs of the zodiac, and since they feel so much, rowdy celebrations can grate on Cancer’s nerves. This sign will be happier at home, making memories with friends and family. “Sentimental Cancer will find creative ways to make the day special with outdoor movies, fun crafts, and patriotic cocktails,” Scalisi explains.

Leo (July 23–August 22)

Leos love a celebration that’s a little extra, and they often find themselves at the center of the action. This fire sign is ruled by the sun—something that tends to shine through their personalities—and according to Scalisi, they live for a good beach party. “As the ruler of the House of Pleasure, there’s nothing Leo loves more than entertaining friends and family,” says Scalisi. “When they’re not soaking up attention [on the beach], Leos will channel their lazy lion and sprawl out in the sunshine for a nap.”

Virgo (August 23–September 22)

“Virgo will take a down-to-earth approach to the holiday weekend,” Scalisi says. “Ruled by the planet Mercury and the earth element, Virgo is all about internalizing knowledge and seeking improvement. In other words, they have little use for frivolity, preferring order to chaos.” For these reasons, Virgos will want to celebrate the 4th of July by doing something low-key, such as attending a 4th of July–themed lunch with friends—and they’ll nominate themselves for appetizer duty for an easy contribution. “Once this introvert has had enough socialization,” Scalisi adds, “Virgo will most likely spend their holiday getting caught up on their to-do list.”

Libra (September 23–October 22)

Libras love social celebrations with a good mix of new and familiar faces. “They are ruled by the air element, which makes them excellent conversationalists, plus they’re under the influence of Venus, so they possess plenty of natural charm,” says Scalisi. They’d particularly enjoy ringing in the 4th of July with a festive pool party, since balance-seeking Libra likes connecting one-on-one with others, sharing personal stories, and making people laugh. Libras also love teaming up for pool party games, because they appreciate the connection they invoke—but don’t try to cheat, because they are all about fairness.

Scorpio (October 23–November 21)

Ruled by the water element and under the influence of Pluto, Scorpios have great emotional depth and are deep thinkers who don’t skim the surface of any subject. That’s why, Scalisi says, “Scorpio may consider a trip to national historic sites and memorial parks this Independence Day.” They might also want to listen to a history podcast on their way there or learn some new 4th of July facts.

But don’t get us wrong—they’d still enjoy a good celebration to go along with an education-packed day. In fact, when they do turn their attention to celebrating, they’ll go all out, “sparing no expense to create a memorable experience for their crew.” Translation: You won’t find Scorpio simply lighting sparklers. Instead, they’ll grab their friends and secure the best viewing spot at one of the more extravagant fireworks displays in the area.

Sagittarius (November 22–December 21)

“Sagittarius is a hard-core freedom lover, so of course, they’ll appreciate a holiday like the 4th,” says Scalisi. “This sign is ruled by Jupiter, which gives them a happy disposition and a desire for personal expansion.” This fire sign loves spending time outdoors, unconfined and free from all responsibilities and commitments. For the 4th of July, Scalisi suggests attending an outdoor music festival. “The atmosphere of live music, sunshine, and happy people will delight this enthusiastic sign,” she explains.

Capricorn (December 22–January 19)

“Capricorn will choose quality over quantity, preferring a private event with friends over a crowd of strangers,” says Scalisi. This earth sign feels most at home in nature, which means they’d particularly love a trip in the great outdoors for the long Independence Day weekend. “Capricorn should consider packing up their gear to enjoy a weekend of camping, biking, or hiking with friends,” says Scalisi. “The hardworking goat will get a kick out of looking down on the fireworks display from a mountaintop.”

Aquarius (January 20–February 18)

Aquarius can always find a reason to celebrate with a good party. And while they love to plan, they also love to participate in others’ celebrations. “They are super social and friendly, so party time with friends will inevitably make it into their weekend plans,” says Scalisi. “But the water bearer also enjoys being a little different and truly cares about making the world a better place.” Aquarius will find great joy in giving back to their community on July 4th—participating in community activities like neighborhood cleanups, donating blood, connecting with local veterans, or contributing to the community garden.

Pisces (February 19–March 20)

“Pisces is a mutable water sign that will be first in line to join the festivities when their presence is requested—but, left to their own devices, they prefer to kick back alone,” says Scalisi. Since Pisces is so deeply empathetic, they need more alone time than most to energetically recover from the business of daily life, and they prefer to engage in a little self-care and bask in their holiday vacation time. Influenced by planet Neptune, they are more dreamy, creative, and emotionally sensitive. “If they can find their way to a natural body of water this holiday weekend, they’ll feel right at home there,” Scalisi notes. Skipping town for some solo time by a lake or river is a great way for Pisces to ring in America’s birthday and enjoy some well-earned solitude.”
