Are 6 Meals Per Day Making You Fat?

The 6-meal a day diet may not be right for you.

If you prescribe to the idea that eating more small meals throughout the day makes it easier to reduce overall calories, check out one of Brad Pilon’s latest videos. In the video, the intermittent fasting proponent discusses the 6-meal-a-day diet followed by so many dieters. We are programmed to think that a meal is a perfect combination of proteins, carbohydrates and fat. In reality, the mini-meals in some studies are much more like small—very small—snacks.

Pilon mentions research that considered anything over 45 calories a meal. He says an apple, coffee with cream and even 3 or 4 nuts can constitute a mini-meal. What else can constitute a mini-meal?

  • Half a banana
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of peanut butter
  • A peach
  • 4 ounces of baby carrots
  • Celery with 1 1/2 tablespoons of hummus
  • ½ container of 2% Fage Yogurt
  • ½ cup of Ciao Bella Blood Orange Sorbet
  • ½ a packet of instant oatmeal
  • 2 ½ Triscuits
  • ½ ounce of cheddar cheese

However, most people who follow this diet strategy consume 6 moderate meals per day and the calories can quickly add up. The point is to stop thinking that multiple, perfectly balanced meals are required to keep your diet in shape. The bottom line: Reduce your overall calorie consumption to lose weight. Eating in moderation remains one of the best ways to stick with your diet.
