Did the holidays get you eating more sugary treats than healthy eats? You’re not alone. Between my sister’s famous sugar cookies and the customized chocolate from Chocomize.com I got in my stocking, my holiday sugar addiction seems to be sticking with me into the new year. All this sugar consumption is leaving me feeling lethargic and bloated, plus it gives me a headache.
Health.com blogger Tina Haupert is feeling the effects of sugar as well and has come up with an action plan to kick the cravings, or at least tame them. One of the most useful tips she offers is to keep a five-day food journal that documents when and why you have your sugar cravings, so you can learn what your triggers are and how to deal with them.
The best trick that works for me is to allow myself to indulge in a small, sweet treat once a day, like a scoop of frozen yogurt or a handful of chocolate-covered almonds. If I know I am not depriving myself then I tend to not crave sugar as much.
Bottom line? Know your triggers and be smart about your choices. It’s okay to give into the sugar urge once a day, but be sure to fill the rest of your day with healthy, whole foods.
