Just in time for Veterans Day, here are the best companies for veterans to work for right now.
While they may no longer be chanting “Oorah” on the field or flying reconnaissance missions overhead, our military veterans still have a lot to offer—especially in the workforce. But getting back into the swing of civilian life and the trenches of the job market can be a battle. Although the U.S. Department of Labor has noted the lowest veteran unemployment rates since 2000, finding the right fit can still be a challenge. That’s why Monster.com, with the help of industry experts, has complied the Best Companies for Veterans to work for in 2017.
“Most companies on the top list do not simply hire vets,” says expert panelist Evan Guzman, founder of The MiLBRAND Project, which helps companies attract and retain veteran hires. “Their military efforts are anchored by four key pillars: support, engage, attract, and retain. These top ten companies have harnessed the value of veterans to elevate their quality hires and brand equity.”
Monster.com developed a methodology with Military.com to review veteran hiring, onboarding, and retention practices at each company. “We were very encouraged to see that this year’s list of winners all have veterans within their recruiting or management teams, and in many instances veteran hiring decisions are coming straight from the CEO,” explains Jodi Hon, SVP and GM of enterprise business for Monster. “The skills that veterans bring to the workforce are being recognized on an enterprise level, and with these large companies leading the charge, we’re sure to see more businesses follow with diversity and inclusion recruitment practices that include veterans in the coming years.”
Without further ado, here’s the list of Monster’s Best Companies for Veterans 2017:
1. ManTech in Fairfax, Virginia
This leading provider of innovative technologies and solutions for national security programs leads as the best all around company for veterans to work—for the second year in a row. A whopping 64 percent of current hires are vets and they plan to up that number annually. ManTech is able to hire a significant number of veterans for a number of reasons, explains Jim Crawford, executive director, external communications. “We have a dedicated veteran recruiter and Military Ambassador and many of our recruiters are veterans,” he says. Also, ManTech’s clients are the federal government, which vets understand and are comfortable with. Bonus: Each new hire gets assigned a “buddy” to help them ease into their position.
2. Intelligent Waves in Reston, Virginia
New to the list, Intelligent Waves specializes in providing IT and communications support to a wide variety of U.S. government customers. They are veteran-owned and proud of it, offering many programs for vets to take advantage of including an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and education benefits program. Here are some ways you can give back to veterans that won’t cost a dime.
3. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in Washington, DC
It’s easy to see why joining the Customer and Border Patrol (CBP) might be a good fit for our veterans as keeping us safe has always been their top priority. And CBP takes their commitment to our vets very seriously. Vets even get to “cut the line” because CBP utilizes a Special Hiring Authorities for Veterans, so they can appoint qualified veterans into positions without them having to go through the tedious job application process.
4. Lockheed Martin in Bethesda, Maryland
A technology defense contractor, Lockheed Martin are experts when it comes to global aerospace and defense making them a natural fit for any vet. Bonus: They have a full-time military relations and recruiting team, made up of retired vets, and host a military/veterans leadership forum every year.
5. Booz Allen Hamilton in McLean, Virginia
Providing management and technology consulting and engineering services, 50 percent of the leaders of Booz Allen Hamilton are veterans, too. The company maintains a Veteran Recruiting Center of Excellence (VRCE) with a specific talent acquisition team geared to recruiting and retaining veterans.
6. Schneider National in Green Bay, Wisconsin
More than a quarter of this trucking and transportation giant’s workforce is veterans. It’s easy to see why with their on-the-job training programs, apprenticeships, and both onsite and web-based instructor-led training for veterans. Bonus: Schneider will accept military truck driving experience and a CDL-A through the Military Skills Test Waiver as certification when applying for a job.
7. USAA in San Antonio, Texas
Veterans need financial advice too and that’s why this company has been providing it to them for 95 years. (Of course, there are some things even your financial advisor won’t tell you.) With a full-time Military Hiring Advisor on staff USAA‘s goal is to hire both veterans and military spouses. Top management is trained on how to interview transitioning service members as well. Bonus: VetsLeaD (Veteran Transition Leadership Development) is a 12-month program featuring classroom training and mentorship potential.
8. BAE Systems in Arlington, Virginia
With a goal of hiring 100 veterans per month, the international defense, aerospace, and security company BAE Systems has a lot to offer. They’re also focused on helping female vets land jobs and their Warrior Integration Program (WIP) focuses on integrating combat-wounded veterans into the workforce.
9. Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha, Nebraska
North America’s railroad franchise, Union Pacific Railroad, has a strong veteran retention rate and over 20 percent of their employees are made up of former military. Making their vets feel comfortable is a priority. In fact, new hires are partnered with a current employee who is also a veteran. Want to move up the ladder? 10. Boeing in Chicago, Illinois
In 2016, the world’s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space, and security had a veteran hire retention rate of 92 percent. That might be because veteran candidates are carefully matched to the best opportunities within the company and get support straight from their president and CEO.
