One of the hardest things about being a fan of any popular restaurant chain is that menu items come and go. With a few exceptions, like Costco’s hot dog and soda combo, nothing lasts forever. But every now and then, there’s a food court change, and an item that has disappeared from the menu makes an unexpected return. That’s exactly what’s happening right now at Costco stores across the country. But there’s also a bit of a twist that no one saw coming.

Keep reading to find out which Costco menu item has returned to the food court, and how it’s surprisingly different than before.

What returned to the food court?

More than five years after the Combo Pizza was discontinued from Costco’s food court, the Combo Calzone made its debut. The new menu offering is stuffed with pepperoni, sausage, cheese, tomato sauce, onions, peppers, olives and mushrooms. The piping-hot calzone costs just $6.99, which is cheaper than just about any fast-food restaurant these days, and contains a whopping 1,080 calories. But to be fair, all that walking around Costco can definitely make you hungry—even if you snack on the free samples!

How is it different from before?

For many years Costco members could visit the food court and order Combo Pizza, a pie that featured lots of toppings, including sausage, pepperoni and a bunch of veggies. However, while pepperoni and cheese pizzas survived the COVID-19 pandemic, sadly, the beloved Combo Pizza did not. It was discontinued in 2020, and ever since, fans have been wishing Costco would bring it back. The Combo Calzone is similar to the original, though nothing can truly replace the Combo Pizza.

What are fans saying?

Usually, when a new item lands on the Costco menu, shoppers are excited, but this time? Not so much. One Reddit user summed up the general feeling succinctly: “Costco will do everything BUT give us the damn combo pizza back.”

While the Combo Calzone is similar to the Combo Pizza, the price point is much higher and, as far as fans are concerned, it’s just not the same. Where a slice of Combo Pizza was just $1.99, the Combo Calzone is three-and-a-half times the price.

While the frustration among Costco fans is understandable, it’s not just the price point that has left fans disappointed. The Combo Calzone itself didn’t exactly make a great first impression. “Am I the only one who doesn’t find this image appetizing?” wrote one Costco shopper on Reddit, in response to the new food court sign advertising the Combo Calzone. “I think it’s that there doesn’t appear to be any cheese in the photo, just a pile of meat inside a crust,” responded another.

The Combo Calzone may not have found its fan base yet, but maybe there is still hope for the future. After all, it has the same fillings as the original Costco Combo Pizza, so surely the flavor has to be on point, even if it’s just not the same.
