258 Main St., Ridgefield, Connecticut
A recently completed expansion doubles the size of this museum and provides a nice architectural contrast to the original 18th-century building. The museum, founded about 40 years ago by Larry Aldrich, a collector of contemporary art, is known for its exhibits focusing mainly on major trends in today’s art world and the works of undiscovered artists.
Behind the museum, on a sloping lawn surrounded by flowering trees and shrubs, are sculptures. The terrace overlooking the garden is a pleasant place to sit and view the collection.
The museum presents three major exhibitions and six or seven smaller ones every year. Widely respected educational and cultural programming complements the exhibition schedule.
Open Tues.– Sun. year-round except winter holidays. Admission charged.
