3074 Winn Rd., Decorah, Iowa
Are you looking for red-, ochre-, and yellow-colored ears of corn for a harvest centerpiece? Would you like to grow everlasting sweet peas like the ones in your grandmother’s garden?
Now you can hunt down hundreds of heirloom vegetables, herbs, fruit trees, and flowers at the Heritage Farm or obtain them from the online store. Headquarters of the Seed Savers Exchange, the 890-acre farm is a living museum where professional gardeners grow thousands of heirloom varieties.
Thanks to their efforts and those of thousands of gardeners who save and trade precious seeds, many great heirloom plants and trees are being saved from extinction. The farm also fosters organic growing methods.
The Lillian Goldman Visitors Center includes a gift shop and a garden center. It offers seeds, garden furniture, and gardening tools, as well as unique and whimsical items such as hot chili-pepper characters cavorting on flour-sack towels.
Open daily Apr.–Dec. Admission charged.
