4800 New Haven Rd., Columbia, Missouri
A project of the nonprofit Thomas Jefferson Agricultural Institute in Columbia, this inviting 67-acre showplace enlightens young and old alike about the important role agriculture and horticulture play in our daily lives. On self-guided and guided tours visitors learn of corn, wheat, and other crops that changed history, the countless benefits of plants, and how food gets from farm to market. Agricultural and home gardening demonstrations are also part of the scene.
A paved path around the lake is lined with native plants, and a zig-zagged boardwalk offers a close-up view of aquatic plants and creatures. The Jefferson Garden is inspired by the third president’s garden at Monticello, where he grew dozens of types of vegetables and rare plants.
