Not only do you want to pick out a gift the person will love, but you need to keep a budget in mind. Is your partner going to spend twice as much as you? Will this present seem cheap to your friend?

To get a feel for holiday spending trends, Snapfish surveyed 1,000 U.S. residents to find out how much they were spending. As it turns out, the answer varies quite a bit from state to state. (Check out this map to learn the most popular Christmas present in every state.)

Nationwide, there was no clear consensus as to how much holiday shoppers would spend on gifts. Reporting how much they spend on holiday gifts on average, the most popular answer was $101 to $500 (25 percent), while $501 to $999 (23 percent) and more than $1,000 (20 percent) followed close behind. Breaking it down by state, the biggest spenders, paying $1,000 or more every year, were Arkansas, California, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah. On the other hand, Arizona, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, New Jersey New Mexico, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Virginia capped their spending at $100. Only 37 percent of respondents said they actually set a budget for holiday shopping, so there’s a good chance the responses varied from year to year. You can find more findings from the Snapfish survey here.
