Three players with some of the longest streaks in Jeopardy! history are making a comeback.
Trivia fans can rejoice over the academic hodgepodge event of the year—the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions. One of America’s most popular gameshows is back with its annual tournament of clues and final Jeopardy! questions that will stump just about anyone. While every year highlights the most competitive players, this year’s Season 38 tournament is extra enticing.
Some of the most successful players in Jeopardy! history are making a comeback to battle it out for the champion title and a grand prize of $250,000.
How long is the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions?
The tournament began on October 31st with its quarterfinals and enters its finals stage on November 14th. The finals can last from November 14th to November 16th and up until November 22nd if needed.
How does the Tournament of Champions Work?
The year’s tournament featured twenty one of the most successful players of Jeopardy! Season 38, duking it out over various trivia in true game show style. The players began by playing in quarterfinal matches. Out of the quarterfinal matches, six of eighteen players advanced—with three others automatically advancing due to their historic Jeopardy! wins within Season 38. The three who automatically advanced participated in a light-hearted exhibition match, instead.
Then, those nine players participated in semifinal matches, with three advancing to the final round of the tournament.
Finally, the final champions will duke it out to see who will win a $250,000 grand prize and is crowned the victor of the beloved trivia tournament. Whichever player wins three games of the tournament will become the winner.
Meet the Season 38 Jeopardy tournament competitors
So, who are these coveted players? Here are some of the tournament’s history-makers!
- Amy Schneider—who has advanced to the finals—is one of the most successful players of Jeopardy! of all time. She had the second longest streak in Jeopardy! history, with forty consecutive wins. Her Jeopardy! victory also made history in major ways: she became the highest winning female contestant (with almost 1.4 million in winnings) and became the first openly transgender contestant to qualify for the tournament. Schneider even spoke at the White House following her Jeopardy! run this year on Transgender Day of Visibility.
- Matt Amodio entered the tournament as one of the most competitive players due to his third longest streak in Jeopardy! history with thirty eight consecutive wins, racking up more than 1.5 million dollars during his run on the show. Sadly, Amodio did not beat his competitors in the semifinals. But we did get to see him face off with two other players—Amy Schneider and Mattea Roach—with the highest streaks in Jeopardy! history in the exhibition match.
- Mattea Roach is a force to be reckoned with, due to their fifth longest streak in Jeopardy! history with twenty three consecutive wins. The former LSAT tutor has made history as both the youngest super champion and most successful Canadian in Jeopardy! history. Unfortunately, the record-breaker also did not make it to the semifinals but still won the exhibition match between her two extremely competitive opponents.
The three have been some of the most highly-anticipated contestants of the tournament. And now, viewers can look forward to Amy Schneider duking it out with Sam Buttrey—undefeated champ of the Professors tournament— and Andrew He, who made it to the final stage of the competition with some risky daily double wagers in which he bet all of his winnings twice.
