Some carriers are better than others at getting passengers to their destinations on schedule, and we have the definitive list
A New Report Just Named the Most Punctual Airlines in America—Here’s What to Fly to Arrive on Time
You’ve planned for a long-awaited dream getaway for months. The destination is set, the hotels and experiences booked. Absolutely everything will go off without a hitch, right? Not always. Sometimes even the most carefully planned vacation can be derailed by things outside travelers’ control, starting with whether or not a flight actually leaves or arrives on time.
Sure, a short delay might be little more than a minor annoyance. Unfortunately, though, timing can matter quite a bit, and late flights may mean anything from missed connections and frantic rebookings to, worst of all, hours stuck in airport purgatory.
A new report by the aviation analytics firm Cirium has ranked the most reliable carriers in the United States and around the world over the past year, revealing which airlines are most likely to meet—or exceed—travelers’ expectations. The findings also reveal which airports best deliver on getting passengers where they’re going on schedule.
Many of this year’s big standouts for steady service belong to the SkyTeam Alliance, and the world’s least-delayed airline has claimed the top spot for a second year in a row. In the U.S., one familiar name continues its dominance, holding on to the most on-time title for an impressive number of years. Read on to find out which airlines and airports lead the on-time pack so you’ll breathe a little easier the next time you book.

How did the report determine the most punctual airlines?
For its airline rankings, Cirium defined on-time as a flight arriving within 15 minutes of its scheduled gate arrival. The company drew on its worldwide database, sourced from more than 600 inputs, including global distribution systems, civil aviation authorities, airlines, airports and airplane positional tracking. It then determined how consistently airlines and airports performed according to their published schedules. From there, the results went to an independent board of aviation industry experts for review.
For airport rankings, Cirium analyzed roughly 36 million flights worldwide over the 2025 calendar year, again sourcing from its global database. Airport rankings for on-time flights were based on whether flights left the gate within 15 minutes of their scheduled departure times. Airports were grouped by annual passenger seat capacity to reflect the scale of their operations. Large airports handled between 25 and 40 million seats per year, medium airports between 15 and 25 million, and smaller hubs between 5 and 15 million. To qualify for inclusion in the on-time performance report, airports had to provide actual gate-departure data for at least 90% of flights.
What’s the most punctual airline in North America?
Delta Air Lines, a SkyTeam Alliance member, earned the top spot as the most punctual airline in North America in 2025. Even more impressive, the Atlanta-based carrier has held the title for five years in a row now. Across 1,800,086 flights last year, with 98.72% of flights making it to their destination without being canceled, Delta’s on-time arrivals tallied 80.9%. Despite the strong showing, Cirium notes that this was actually a dip of more than 2 percentage points from 2024, largely due to factors such as the government shutdown and resulting air-traffic controller shortages.
Coming in second, Alaska Airlines, posted 79.20% on-time arrivals out of 453,031 flights. The Seattle-based carrier’s jump from third place in 2024 was largely attributed to its relative insulation from many of the FAA equipment-failure issues that plagued other airlines last year.

How can you avoid or manage flight delays?
Delays happen, even when you pick the best airports and least-delayed airlines. Here are some simple and practical tips to keep your trip on track.
- Take an early flight: When delays occur because of weather, congestion or other disruptions, they often cascade throughout the day, so the first flights out are statistically less likely to run late.
- Add buffer time: If your trip includes connecting flights, build in a little extra time between legs—just a short delay on that first flight could have stressful consequences.
- Consider alternate airports: Sometimes choosing smaller regional airports or secondary terminals can mean faster check-ins, shorter security lines and fewer delays.
- Arrive early: Being in the terminal, not stuck in slow security lines or traffic, gives you a better shot at catching alternatives in the event of a flight delay.
- Check in ASAP: Being among the first to check in and arriving early may help you avoid getting bumped if a flight encounters unexpected problems.
- Stay calm and flexible: Even the best-laid plans can go awry, so keeping a flexible mindset can help turn an already stressful situation into a temporary inconvenience.
