107 Sutherland Rd., Lake Charles, Louisiana
Named originally for the hero of the Alamo, who according to legend often stayed in this area, the 1,087-acre park now carries the name of the 1940s Louisiana governor who was responsible for preserving these grounds. Here you will find some of the loveliest landscape in Louisiana—towering pines, dense woodlands, lakes, and cypress-bordered lagoons.
The quiet, scenic waters are ideal for boating, and boats are available for rent. A launch ramp and two docks are provided for those who bring their own. Fishing from a boat or along the banks can produce a catch of white perch, bream, or bass. The park has several campsites, picnic grounds, and nature trails.
During the migrating season birders come here for a tally of the species that stop to rest and feed on their way across the state.
Open year-round. Admission charged.
