The Duchess of Sussex revealed her fondness for this late TV host, too

Before her royal transformation into the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle didn’t just play roles on TV. She also had favorite shows of her own. And no, we’re not talking about The Crown—although her husband, Prince Harry is a fan!

On the ninth episode of her Spotify podcast, Archetypes—a podcast that works to “investigate, dissect and subvert the labels that try to hold women back,” according to its official description—the Duchess divulged her long-life love of Jeopardy! and its iconic host of 37 years, Alex Trebek.

What did Meghan Markle say about Jeopardy?

The podcast episode, titled “To ‘B’ or not to ‘B’?” featuring Mellody Hobson and Victoria Jackson, opens with Markle discussing her love of media.

“At this point in the series, I think we’ve established that I spent a lot of time in front of the TV growing up. I loved movies and shows,” the Duchess said. “I had my favorite programs, and as we continue to unearth with Archetypes, many of them can be influenced by pop culture and by the media.”

Markle went on to emphasize that for those raised in the 1980s and 1990s, television was similar to the popularity of social media today. According to Markle, it was imperative to catch one’s favorite show when it was airing. Especially because before the age of streaming, one couldn’t record shows unless “you had a blank VCR tape, that you could race to cue up at the exact time so you’d hope not to miss your favorite show,” Markle explained.

“You’ll also remember,” Markle went on, “the shows that you were always ready for, and for me, this was Jeopardy!. Jeopardy! was my favorite show growing up and I would eat my dinner on a TV tray in front of the screen watching each category and clue with bated breath and intense focus, trying to absorb whatever facts they were firing off in the form of a question.”

What did Meghan say about Alex Trebek?

Markle not only has a flare for Jeopardy!, but a deep appreciation for the show’s beloved host—Alex Trebek. Alex Trebek hosted Jeopardy! for 37 seasons until he passed from pancreatic cancer.

“My obsession with this show was so deep, you guys, when Alex Trebek passed away I started to receive texts of condolence,” Markle stated. “I didn’t know him, but everyone who knew me knew how meaningful Jeopardy!—and its host—were as a daily part of my life.” Markle echoed sentiments to how many felt about Trebek and the role Jeopardy! played in their lives.

The show and its legacy also had a deep impact on Markle, as she goes on to say, “this love of facts extended into my love of words—etymology, grammar, admiring people with expansive vocabularies, I was and I still am, a word-nerd.”
