How did our forefathers survive the wilderness before modern conveniences were dreamed of? The nonprofit Crab Orchard Museum and Pioneer Park dusts off history to re-create the past. The park comprises 15 original structures (the earliest, a cabin built in 1802) that were moved to the site, carefully reconstructed, and furnished with equally authentic artifacts. These homes, barns, and village shops paint an intriguing portrait of real life on the frontier. Even the vegetable and herb gardens grow varieties specific to settlement days.

The museum offers numerous exhibits about the history, geology, and wildlife of this Appalachian region, including the Native Americans who preceded the first Europeans. Special attention is paid to the crucial role pioneer women played in settlement and farm life.

Tues.-Sat. year-round. Open Sun. Memorial Day–Labor Day only. Admission charged.
