The Niobrara River drains over 12,000 square miles of north-central Nebraska’s Sand Hills, one of the largest windswept dune areas in the world. This is a grass-covered prairie expanse of rare natural beauty, of pine-scented rolling hills, flower-strewn prairies, tall sandstone cliffs, and tumbling waterfalls. Wildlife abounds. Deer, bison, elk, beaver, and mink roam the open prairie, while herons and kingfishers soar above the river before diving for fish.
Designated a National Scenic River by Congress, the Niobrara is ideal for boating. You can paddle along by canoe or kayak or float leisurely downstream in a tube or on a raft. Early morning and late evening are the best times to spot wildlife. Several hiking trails and a self-guided wildlife drive lead to glimpses of native animals.
Open year-round.
