In 2023, expect to see USPS stamps that depict iconic figures in American history and beyond
It’s that time of year again! The United States Postal Service (USPS) has unveiled its new postal stamps for release in 2023. Typically, the USPS reveals the next year’s stamps sometime in the fall. The stamp designs for 2022 were shared in November 2021, but the USPS shared 2023’s stamps in late October this year.
Many of the new stamps honor iconic Americans, while others feature beautiful outdoor scenes or raise awareness of certain issues. Let’s walk through some of the post office stamps the USPS will offer in 2023 for your mail delivery.
What are the new stamps being released?
Similar to years past, many of 2023’s stamps feature iconic figures throughout American history. Here are just a few of the new postal stamps coming to a post office near you next year.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg
One icon the USPS will honor in 2023 is Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Ginsburg, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 87, is largely considered one of the most important women in American history. She was the second female Supreme Court Justice and was a vocal advocate for gender equality. The stamp features Ginsburg in her judicial robe and legendary collar.
Toni Morrison
The new stamps will also feature cherished novelist Toni Morrison. Morrison was the first African American woman to be awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993. She garnered widespread recognition for her novels including Song of Solomon, The Bluest Eye and Beloved.
Roy Lichtenstein
If you appreciate stamps that are a work of art, you’ll enjoy the Roy Lichtenstein stamps for 2023. Lichtenstein was a celebrated part of the comic book-esque pop art movement of the 1960s. These stamps will feature nostalgic, upbeat designs that add a pop of fun to any envelope. (Bonus: Your mail will certainly stand out, which could reduce the likelihood of lost mail!)
Women’s Soccer
Women’s soccer will be celebrated in stamp form in 2023. The design, which includes patriotic red, white and blue colors, features a female player kicking a soccer ball to highlight the millions of girls and women around the country who participate in the sport.
Endangered Species
Some of the new postal stamps were also created to draw awareness to timely topics, like the endangered species issuance. The Endangered Species Act turns 50 in 2023, and these stamps celebrate both how many species have been saved and how many still need help. The pane of 20 stamps shows animals that are currently endangered and is credited to Joel Sartore, a wildlife photographer.
Chief Standing Bear
One of the most ornate new stamps depicts Chief Standing Bear, a Native American who won a landmark supreme court ruling in 1879. The ruling affirmed Native Americans as people under the law with the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This stamp features an incredibly detailed portrait that depicts an essential figure in American history.
Ernest J. Gaines
The Ernest J. Gaines stamp issuance marks the 46th stamp in the Black Heritage series. Gaines was a novelist best known for his incredible contributions to American literature with his books, including A Lesson Before Dying and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman. The portrait was created based on a 2001 picture of Gaines.
Love
Rounding out the list of new stamps to expect in 2023 is an updated version of the beloved Love stamps. In 2023, USPS is celebrating 50 years of Love stamps by unveiling two new ones. One shows a puppy, the other a kitten and both pets have their paws over their heart.
