Airline travel has never been more accessible. Since the first scheduled passenger airline service started up 104 years ago, the most rapid form of transit has increased in efficiency and safety, but not all airlines are equal in these categories. Each year, AirlineRatings compiles a list of the world’s safest airlines, and plenty of the usual suspects showed up in its 2018 report.

The Australian research site analyzes crash records, serious incident occurrences, and fleet age, as well as government and industry audits, to determine their list. Of the 409 carriers studied, 20 made the cut equally as the best of the best. Here they are in alphabetical order:

  • Air New Zealand
  • Alaska Airlines
  • All Nippon Airways
  • British Airways
  • Cathay Pacific Airways
  • Emirates
  • Etihad Airways
  • EVA Air
  • Finnair
  • Hawaiian Airlines
  • Japan Airlines
  • KLM
  • Lufthansa
  • Qantas
  • Royal Jordanian Airlines
  • Scandinavian Airline System
  • Singapore Airlines
  • Swiss
  • Virgin Atlantic
  • Virgin Australia

There was a minor shakeup in the rankings from 2017 to 2018, as both Delta and United Airlines dropped from the top 20, while Emirates and the Royal Jordanian Airline System joined the rankings.  Of the top airlines, Qantas, Hawaiian Airlines, and Finnair have spotless safety records in the jet area, with no recorded fatalities. No matter which airline you fly, make sure you follow these 16 air travel tips to make every flight as safe as possible
