What’s that under those manila folders? If your desk is so cluttered you can no longer find your keyboard, it’s time to clear off the piles and get organized. Get started with these simple steps from Do It Yourself magazine.
Use the wall. Instead of filling up valuable surface real estate on your desk with file holders and inboxes, make use of vertical space. Attach shelves, wall-mounted organizers and even hanging filing systems to the wall and fill them with everything that’s been piling up on your desktop. Even small accessories like notepads or chargers can be stashed in attractive containers and stored on a shelf.
Stow away the small stuff. Do you really need two staplers, 16 pens, three boxes of pushpins, and a roll of tape on display on your desk? Maximize the storage potential of shallow drawers with dividers and small containers for holding things like paper clips, staples, and rubber bands. If your accessories are too large to fit in a drawer, consider replacing them with sleeker models.
Prevent pile-ups. Mail, receipts, reminders…even in this digital age it’s hard not to feel literally buried in paperwork. Keep the piles from taking over your workspace by simplifying your filing system. Dedicate a separate folder or slot for bills, invoices, receipts, and any other paperwork you regularly acquire. Assign each folder to a day of the week and make a standing appointment with yourself to go through the contents. Recycle envelopes, junk mail, and any paperwork you no longer need.
