These Are America’s Most Spoiled Dog Breeds

Updated: May 16, 2023

Think your dog is spoiled? This survey reveals some pups that get the royal treatment.

People adore their dogs, whether they’re raising a puppy or caring for an adopted dog. But is there a particular breed that gets more love than others? From beaucoup treats to snooze times, one survey set out to find the answer to this woof-erful question—and its results reveal America’s preference toward a few breeds as doggie royalty.

But what makes a dog more spoiled than others? The answer lies in how much a dog rules the house, how their owners talk to them and various other factors that add up to the title of the country’s most spoiled dog breeds.

How did the survey poll users about the country’s most spoiled dog breeds?

Commissioned by holistic pet food brand Solid Gold and conducted by OnePoll, the “America’s most spoiled dog breed” survey analyzed responses from 2,000 U.S. dog owners and found three breeds took the top slots.

The survey, which was conducted from April 25 to 27, touches on several aspects of dog care, including food and water, treats, a dog’s sleeping habits and how owners communicate with their beloved pups (fun fact: 32% of dog owners say they talk to their pup like a child and four out of five talk to their dog like they’re human).

While extra treats (two-thirds of terrier owners) and fancy bottled water (294 of toy breed owners) may be one thing, some dog owners even admitted to taking their dogs on vacation and 37% said they treat their dogs so well they wouldn’t mind switching bodies for a day—now that’s a spoiled fur baby.

So which breeds won the coveted title of most spoiled? Before you spill the details and your dog gets jealous—and they do get jealous, that’s a dog fact!—remember if you give your dog a loving home, odds are you’re already spoiling them.

“Most of us will make the claim our dog is ‘the’ most spoiled dog, but there’s a clear trend pointing towards smaller breeds as being the most doted on,” Yvethe Tyszka, vice president of marketing at Solid Gold, told the New York Post. “Regardless of size or breed, all dog owners agree their pups deserve the best with delicious treats, walks and all of our attention.”

It’s natural to want to give your dog some extra treats. Dogs respond best to rewards, and treats can help you cultivate a great relationship. But these spoiled dog breeds get more than their fair share of “extras.” From sleeping until noon to hand-prepared meals, these herding dogs took the top slots, scoring 66% on the spoiled scale:

Taking second place were these three non-sporting dog breeds coming in at 64%:

And in third (59%) were three terrier breeds:

Even if your pup isn’t among the most spoiled dog breeds, it’s clear Americans like to treat their dogs like royalty.
