The One Deadly Pet Toy You Need to Avoid Giving Your Dog

Watch out, dog lovers!

For a lot of people (see: normal people), their dog is a member of their family. You take care of Fido through thick and thin, when he’s sick (here are the silent signs your pooch is actually sick), and when he’s barking into the dark void of the night like an old man yelling at a cloud. When Christmas or his birthday rolls around,  you’ll buy him a toy to tousle with in perpetuity.

But next time you head to the pet store, skip the bone aisle entirely. The FDA recently released a warning for dog owners urging them to stop buying bone treats after 15 canine deaths. “Bone treats,” as defined by the FDA, are “real bones that have been processed, sometimes flavored, and packaged for dogs.”

All told, bone treats have led to 68 illness reports affecting 90 dogs. The health threat that bone treats pose include vomiting, diarrhea, gastrointestinal obstructions, blocked airways, and internal bleeding. A good, safe, non-bone alternative would be anything made out of rawhide, which won’t splinter and break potentially harming your furry friend. Antlers are in the clear, too.

Avoid those bone-treats (and these 12 other foods your dog shouldn’t eat) and be sure to consult your veterinarian about what treats are best for your pup.
