The Laundress Just Recalled Every Single Product They Sell

Here's what you need to know about the luxe cleaning company's recall, and how to get your reimbursement.

The Laundress, the popular cleaning brand that makes luxe, chemical-free detergents, recently recalled all of its products. The news came as a shock to fans of the brand, which is highly regarded for its high-efficiency laundry detergent, home dry-cleaning kits, detergents for sensitive skin, as well as for being one of our best-smelling laundry detergents.

The company itself put out a “safety notice” alert on its website and social media accounts. In the alert, consumers were advised to “immediately stop using all The Laundress products in your possession. We have identified the potential presence of elevated levels of bacteria in some of our products that present a safety concern.”

Customers demanded more answers and were understandably shaken, citing their use of the popular products for their families. By last week, The Laundress provided more information on the safety notice on its website. Here’s what you need to know.

Why did The Laundress issue a recall?

The Laundress products were found to be contaminated with bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can contaminate and grow on laundry.

According to Consumer Reports, bacteria such as Pseudomonas, at higher levels, can cause infection in the blood, lungs and wound sites. It’s particularly dangerous to those who are immunocompromised and other vulnerable people. To make matters worse, some strains of Pseudomonas are resistant to antibiotics, which can increase the severity of infections.

“Based on our investigation to date, we are not aware of any adverse health impacts related to this issue,” The Laundress’ said in a statement. The company also says that people with healthy immune systems are usually not affected by this bacteria.

What should I do if I have one of The Laundress’s products?

To start, consult the list of products in the safety notice, just released by The Laundress in consultation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Flagged products run the gamut from spot cleaner to denim detergent to glass cleaner. Next, The Laundress has set up a site for consumer reimbursements on the recalled products. According to the company, there are several things you’ll need to request reimbursement:

  • Get a photo of the lot code for an impacted product. This is located on the bottom or side of the bottle with your initials and today’s date written in marker. If you have multiple products, you may include all products in the same photo, as long as they have your initials and the date written next to each lot code on all of the products.
  •  The email address you used when you placed your order if you purchased online directly from thelaundress.com.
  • A receipt for the impacted product in the period January 2021—November 2022.
