If there’s one television show that transcends time and is beloved by every generation, it’s Wheel of Fortune. The classic game show has been a television mainstay for five decades, and for many of us, it’s basically comfort viewing—myself included. One of my earliest memories is trying to guess the game show’s answers with my grandma as we bonded over the fun of exercising our brains and marveling at Vanna White’s gorgeous dresses night after night.

The sound of the spinning wheel became part of the soundtrack of my childhood, and yet I’d never actually stopped to wonder why it made that unmistakable clicking sound. Even now, despite the fact that I’m a television writer and know all the ins and outs of the magic of television, I was still shocked when I learned the unusual source of that sound.

Curious? Keep reading to find out what makes that signature clicking sound on Wheel of Fortune and which fan-favorite cast member was surprised by this recently unearthed discovery.

What makes the wheel’s signature clicking sound?

Wheel of Fortune‘s clicking sound is unlike any other, and believe it or not, the noise comes from rubber bands attached to the wheel! If you’ve ever seen the small rubber bands that are used in orthodontics, they’re similar to those, except on a much larger scale.

This big reveal came about during Vanna White and Ryan Seacrest’s recent appearance on Good Morning America. Seacrest let fans in on the source of the signature sound, sharing a small part of the beloved show’s inner workings with the people who love it so much. (Unfortunately, he didn’t elaborate on the exact mechanics of this startling revelation.)

Who was also surprised by this big reveal?

Fans weren’t the only ones surprised by the big Wheel of Fortune reveal. Even after more than 40 years on the show, White was also stunned.

“Do you know I never knew that?” White replied in response to Seacrest’s revelation.

No word on whether Pat Sajak knew about the rubber bands. Last year, Seacrest took over for the iconic Wheel of Fortune host, who retired in 2024 after 41 years. The show first aired in 1975, making it the longest-running syndicated game show in the United States! It was originally hosted by Chuck Woolery of Love Connection fame.

After 50 years, Wheel of Fortune is a show we’ve all come to know and love, but there’s so much more than meets the eye—and we’re not just talking about the famous clicking sound! There are plenty of other behind-the-scenes secrets about Wheel of Fortune too, such as:

  • Vanna White wears a different dress for every episode, but she doesn’t keep them. Every dress goes right back to the designer after taping each episode! And she’s only ever worn the same dress twice one time, in September 2020, due to a production mistake.
  • The famous wheel, which contains 24 pricing wedges, is a lot heavier than it looks. It weighs 2,400 pounds!
  • The cast and crew of Wheel of Fortune usually film six episodes per production day, and each season takes 35 days per year to shoot.
  • The iconic puzzle board consists of 52 touch-screen television monitors: 12 across the top and bottom rows, and two rows of 14 in the middle.
  • Every year, more than 10,000 people try out to be contestants on the show, but fewer than 600 get the chance to play.
