BizReport’s Founder: I Learned a Big Lesson After Spending More Than $1,000 on Full-Service LLC Help

A firsthand lesson in choosing the right LLC services, and why understanding your needs first can save hundreds.

Establishing a Limited Liability Company (LLC) feels less like paperwork to many first-time business owners and more like a way to guard against expensive errors. Particularly if you’ve never done it before, llc services can feel like the safest option when state regulations, filing deadlines, and compliance requirements seem intimidating. The natural tendency is to turn everything over to experts when things appear unclear, believing that greater assistance would result in fewer issues.

That’s what Erik Pham, also known as Huy Pham, did when forming his first U.S. LLC. Now a successful entrepreneur, founder of BizReport, and Forbes Business Council member, his company helps small business owners with LLC creation, accounting, tax, and business management. But before building this platform, Erik learned an expensive lesson.

Looking back, Erik says the services worked as promised. The issue was his lack of understanding. Without knowing what applied to him, he paid for much he didn’t need, most of which added little value.

“I assumed more coverage meant fewer problems.”

When Erik started his business, he chose a premium, full-service LLC formation package. The decision felt logical. The package included legal support, compliance assistance, and a long list of protections designed to prevent mistakes. For someone unfamiliar with how to start an LLC, it seemed like a safe bet.

“I didn’t want to miss anything,” Erik says. “I thought paying for full coverage would reduce the chance of mistakes.”

The service was delivered as promised. Paperwork was correct, add-ons disclosed, and legal access provided. But Erik realized many services targeted more complex businesses than his.

Some features fit companies with offices, employees, or heavy regulation. Erik’s business had none. But at checkout, everything felt necessary.

“When you don’t see the full process, every add-on feels important,” he says.

“Nearly $300 in add-ons were easy to buy and even easier to forget.”

Along with the main package, a series of add-ons was included: compliance monitoring, legal subscriptions, and ongoing support plans. None of these costs was hidden.

“They were clearly listed,” Erik explains. “But once everything was active, it was easy to forget what was recurring and what wasn’t.”

Over time, small fees added up. Erik estimates $300 spent on add-ons he rarely used or needed. Failing to give required attention to canceling is easily overlooked when launching a business.

“It wasn’t one big expense,” he says. “It was a series of small ones that just kept going.”

Erik is careful to point out that this wasn’t deceptive pricing. The responsibility was his. He committed to services without fully understanding whether they were relevant.

“Some compliance tasks were simpler than I expected.”

As Erik learned more, he found that several outsourced tasks were manageable. Annual reports, state filings, and routine admin work were simpler than he expected.

“Once I understood what was required, some of it was very simple,” he says. “I could’ve handled it myself.”

The lesson wasn’t to avoid professional help, but to know when it saves time and when learning the basics is more efficient.

“The problem wasn’t hiring help, it was hiring without context.”

By the end of the experience, Erik’s perspective had shifted.

“Hiring help isn’t a bad idea,” he says. By the end of the experience, Erik’s perspective had shifted.

Some services are absolutely worth the cost, especially once a business has revenue, employees, or regulatory complexity. Others depend entirely on your industry, state, and business structure. Without context, first-time owners often buy protection against problems they don’t yet have.

That same mindset now shapes BizReport’s mission. The goal isn’t to push people toward or away from professional services, but to help business owners understand their options before committing to premium bundles or recurring subscriptions.

“Once you see the full picture,” Erik says, “it’s much easier to choose what you really need.”

The takeaway for new business owners

Erik’s experience is common. Many new entrepreneurs spend money to avoid uncertainty rather than to improve their processes. Professional services are delivered, but the challenge is matching them to your needs.

The key lesson: Getting help is valuable, but only after understanding what services you truly need and why.

The necessity of awareness and preparedness is finally shown by Erik’s experience. Knowing what you need before making a service investment might help you save on wasteful spending and strengthen your company’s base. Spend some time learning, making educated decisions, and expressing questions. Your future business will thank you.
