If you’re one of the 100 million iPhone users in the U.S. alone, chances are, you’ve used the trusty calculator feature at some point. As one of the most basic smartphone features, the calculator could even be found on the best-selling phone of all time (it’s not a smartphone). But something crucial seems to be missing from the iPhone’s calculator app. No matter which way you flip the orientation of the calculator, there isn’t a backspace button.
Anytime an iPhone user types the wrong number, they have gone through the maddening process of deleting the entire thing with the clear button and starting over from scratch. If you make a mistake on the first number, it may seem like no big deal to hit clear and begin again, but anyone who has used their iPhone calculator to work on their budgets, or more serious accounting, knows that typing the wrong digit half an hour in is enough to make you want to pull your hair out.
But there is a way to backspace. All it requires is a simple finger swipe.
When you fumble your fingers typing in a long number or equation, simply swipe the screen left to right on top of the mistake and then the most recently typed digit will be deleted. You can keep swiping for additional deletes.
