How do I know if I have toenail fungus?

Toenail fungus, also know as onychomcosis, is characterized by inflammation, thickening, swelling, yellowing, and pain of the toenail and toe. Another symptom is crumbling of the toenail. It’s caused by an abnormal PH of the skin, which can happen because of poor hygiene, a bad immune system, exposure to high levels of moisture, and/or poor circulation. You can try these natural remedies to prevent or get rid of toenail fungus.

Tea tree oil

This natural toenail fungus treatment has anti-fungal and antiseptic properties. First clean the affected area and then apply tea tree oil directly to the toe. Let it soak on the nail and skin for about 10 minutes and then scrub it off. Repeat daily. These are more medicinal benefits of tea tree oil.

Baking soda

Baking soda has the ability to dry up the excess moisture on your toes and it will help neutralize foot odor. Create a paste using baking soda and water and apply it to the toenail. Let it soak for 10 minutes and then rinse off. You can also create a foot bath by mixing a bucket of water with baking soda and letting your entire foot soak.

Cornmeal

This toenail fungus cure contains a fungus that is harmless to the body but kills the fungus that is infectious to people. Mix a cup of cornmeal and two quarts of water in a tub big enough to fit your feet. Let the cornmeal sit in the water for an hour and then soak your foot or feet for a half hour or more. White vinegar or apple cider vinegar

Vinegar is slightly acidic, so natural remedies like apple cider vinegar get rid of toenail fungus work to balance to pH of the skin. It also helps to prevent the fungus from spreading and kills bacteria and fungi. Mix equal parts vinegar and water and soak the infected area for 30 minutes daily. Mouthwash

Mouthwash kills bacteria and germs in your mouth, so why not use it to kill bacteria and germs on your feet? Its antiseptic properties work to keep away harmful bacteria and fungi. Combine equal parts white vinegar and mouthwash and soak the infected area for 30 minutes, then scrub the toenail area gently. Repeat once or twice daily until the infection clears.

Lavender oil

Lavender oil has antiseptic properties and it also prevents skin irritation. Use a cotton ball to apply lavender oil to your toe, leave it on for 10 to 20 minutes and then rinse off. Repeat multiple times a day.

Garlic

Garlic has antifungal properties thanks to its compounds such as allicin and ajoene. These natural compounds work to treat the toenail fungus. Mix crushed up garlic or garlic oil with white vinegar. Apply the mixture on and around the infected area and then cover it with a bandage. Leave the bandage on for a few hours. Repeat daily until the fungus clears.
