10 Weight-Loss Products That Are Worth Your Money
Weight-loss products are a dime a dozen, and few are backed by research. However, these products may help you shed pounds safely and effectively, and they have the science to support their claims.
People use this fatty acid in smoothies, coffee, salad dressings, and more. The idea is that your body can burn these shorter fat chains faster, meaning that their calories are less likely to end up on your waist and thighs. Research suggests that MCTs (medium-chain triglycerides) may help you feel fuller longer, and they may help curb appetite so you eat less food. There’s a bonus: If you exercise, MCTs may boost endurance so you can have stronger, more beneficial workouts.
Green tea extract
Green tea extract is a popular ingredient in many over-the-counter (OTC) weight-loss pills, in part thanks to their catechin content. Catechins are compounds known for their antioxidant benefits. Research suggests that green tea extract may help people lower their BMI and body weight. Green tea extract is available mixed in supplements with other active ingredients, but most research has been done on the extract alone. Brewed green tea is also great, though it has fewer catechins than a concentrated extract.
These post-meal lozenges are gaining in popularity. “They help put a brake on overeating via two mechanisms,” says Julie Upton, MS, RD, registered dietitian and co-founder of Appetite for Health. “First, they make you mindful of what you’re eating. Second, they are designed to trigger sensory and physiological changes that can help individuals feel satisfied and reduce cravings or desires for sweets.” A Stanford University study found that overweight participants who used MealEnders three to four times per day ate about 200 fewer daily calories than people who did not use the product. “That could amount to a 10- to 15-plus-pound weight loss in a year,” Upton says. Sweet Defeat works similarly to MealEnders.
Psyllium fiber is popular among keto eaters (it helps them stay regular), but for people seeking weight-loss rewards, supplements like Sunergetic premium psyllium husk capsules may help shed pounds. One study found that people who supplemented their diet with psyllium lost about seven pounds during a six-month study, and they were less likely to gain back the weight than people on other types of fiber supplements. “This is essentially Metamucil reformulated to be a satiety supplement rather than a laxative,” says Upton. “I recommend taking it about 20 minutes before meals.” As a bonus, psyllium fiber supplements may also help control blood sugar, insulin, and LDL (bad) cholesterol. Here are 13 supplements and vitamins that may help with weight loss.
Approved by the FDA, alli was introduced about a decade ago. Research shows this medicine can help people lose weight by preventing the amount of fat the intestines absorb. In fact, one study found that orlistat (the generic name for alli) helped people lose about 6.6 pounds over a year. “Orlistat blocks the enzyme required to digest fat completely, so you don’t absorb all of the calories from fat,” Upton says. “There are some GI (gastrointestinal) issues, such as diarrhea, if you overeat fat and are taking alli. But people I know who have used it have had good results.” Upton adds you still need to cut back on calories, but alli might provide an extra boost to help with weight loss. Here are more FDA-approved prescription weight-loss pills really work.
White kidney bean extract
Turning up in supplements like GNC Total Lean Phase 2 Carb Controller, white kidney bean extract (Phaseolus vulgaris) is gaining popularity as more studies suggest it may help. Research indicates the extract may block the work of alpha-amylase, an enzyme that turns carbohydrates into sugar. By stopping that process, the body has less glucose available to convert into body fat. Phase 2 has a proprietary blend of alpha-amylase inhibiting units (AAIU), and several studies have found it can help with weight loss. As a bonus, these studies also show that Phase 2 may help manage blood sugar levels, boost energy, guard against insulin resistance, and more.
Green coffee bean extract
Green coffee beans are just the raw version of those you grind for your morning brew. Research gives them a thumbs up for weight-loss: One study found that participants who took 200 mg of green coffee bean extract daily lost about 12 pounds on average over three months. The extract may offer other health benefits as well, reports Medical News Today. A review of studies found that people who used the extract lost an average of five pounds compared to people who took a placebo. Because it contains caffeine, it may cause some side effects like gastrointestinal issues and headache. Svetol green coffee bean extract offers pills in 200 mg doses. Here are 50 things doctors wish you knew about weight loss.
Conjugated linoleic acid
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has been on the OTC weight-loss supplement market for a while, and that’s because research continues to show it may have some weight-loss benefits. However, most of that research is in animals, not humans. CLA is a type of fatty acid that may help reduce appetite, increase body fat breakdown, and boost metabolism. One review found that weight loss in humans taking CLA was minimal, but a 2012 study found that people can lose about three pounds in a month compared to people who take a placebo. Apple cider vinegar
You’ve no doubt heard rumblings about ACV (apple cider vinegar). It turns out these pills may help you avoid storing fat, but only if you’re already eating a reduced calorie diet and exercising. “Acetic acid is the main component of vinegar and gives it that memorable taste. It has been shown in multiple scientific studies to suppress the ability of the body to store fat,” explains Ryan Neinstein, MD, a New York plastic surgeon. “In addition to the control of daily calorie intake and a more active lifestyle, consuming diets or food with bioactive nutrients has been proposed as an effective solution to combat and even prevent obesity.” Havasu Nutrition extra strength apple cider vinegar pills are the most popular weight-loss pills on Amazon right now.
This member of the Bacteroidetes family could be the single best probiotic for weight loss. When researchers out of Université Laval in Quebec, Canada, placed 125 overweight men and women on a 12-week weight-loss diet, followed by a 12-week period aimed at maintaining body weight, the women who took two probiotics from the L. rhamnosus family lost twice as much weight, compared with their counterparts who did not take probiotics. (Sorry guys: Men did not see the same benefits.) The strain used in this study is manufactured by Nestlé, for use in certain yogurts in Europe. Probiotics found in dairy products in the United States such as Dr. Mercola Complete Probiotics for Women work in a similar fashion. Look for L. rhamnosus on the label of supplements or dairy products. Next, don’t miss these 50 weight-loss breakthroughs doctors wish you knew about.
