Can we all agree that the best part about a visit to the salon is walking out with that bouncy, silky, blowout hair? And while we’d love to sip Prosecco in our hairdresser’s chair once a week, learning how to blowout hair at home will ultimately save you a ton of money. However, achieving the perfect blowout isn’t as easy as just turning on a blow dryer.
We spoke to Jon Reyman, celebrity hair stylist and owner of New York based Spoke & Weal Salon, who points out that hair is complex, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to how to blowout hair. But whether your hair is straight, wavy, curly, or coiled; fine, medium, or course, there a few blowout hair tips that Jon says everyone should follow.
Contrary to popular belief, you should never rough dry hair. Instead, Jon advises smoothing and straightening wet hair immediately. And while cranking up the heat might save time, he recommends slowing down. Taking fewer passes through and a lower heat setting will cause less damage and help you get a longer lasting style. But his most important tip? Tools + techniques = results.
Investing in quality tools and products will keep your hair healthy and make your style last. Not sure where to start? We’ve rounded up the best tools and products on the market to help you get salon quality, blowout hair at home. While we’re on the subject, here’s the one tool that will make us never pay for a blowout again.
Aquis Microfiber Hair Towel
Since your hair is at its weakest when wet, a quality microfiber hair towel is a worthy $21 investment. These microfiber hair towels pull excess water away from your hair quickly and evenly without wringing or rubbing and can reduce your drying time by up to 50 percent. That means less frizz, and noticeably softer, smoother, and healthier hair. One of our editors tested the Aquis in real life—here’s what she thought.
Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer
When it comes to drying your hair, a quality hair dryer is key, and Dyson’s Supersonic Hair Dryer is king. This machine features a powerful motor and Air Multiplier technology, which produces a high-velocity jet of controlled air that will dry your hair in record time. It also has intelligent heat control which measures the air temperature over 40 times a second to prevent extreme heat damage.
Pro Tip: Always use a nozzle on your hair dryer to direct the heat and air flow. If you have curly hair, Reyman recommends using Dyson’s wide-tooth comb attachment with your Supersonic Hair Dryer to help lengthen and shape your hair as it dries.
It’s A 10 Miracle Blow Dry H20 Shield
This is one product that lives up to its name! Spritzing this heat-activated miracle product on your towel-dried hair will set you up for days of shiny, frizz-free hair. It contains strengthening ingredients such as Panthenol, sunflower seed, green tea, and aloe vera extracts which help protect your color and act like a shield to protect your hair from damage. Don’t even consider adding heat to your hair without a spritz of this first.
Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer and Volumizer Hot Air Brush
Revlon’s one-step hair dryer is an affordable alternative to pricier styling alternatives. If you love convenient, time-saving tools, then this affordable hair dryer is for you. This tool dries and volumizes your hair in one step while its ionic technology helps reduce frizz by 30 percent. The oval shape, air flow vents, and ceramic technology all work to minimize heat-related damage and keep your hair looking shiny and healthy. Want to know more? Here’s what one Reader’s Digest editor had to say about this multi-tasking miracle tool.
Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener
Say goodbye to heat-damaged strands, frizz, and flyaways and hello to smooth, shiny strands thanks to Dyson’s Corrale Hair Straightener. This cordless wonder features manganese copper alloy plates that gather your hair, allowing you to create the same style but with less heat and 50 percent less breakage. Its OLED screen displays battery level, charging status, and temperature control. The intelligent heat control regulates the temperature of the plates 100 times a second, ensuring you never exceed your set temperature.
Kitsch 100 Percent Satin Pillowcase
Did you know that your cotton pillowcases could actually be damaging your hair? Not only do the silk or satin pillowcases preserve your blowout, but they actually minimize friction, abrasion, and breakage. Less friction means less frizz, and that’s pretty much all we need to hear! One editor slept on a satin pillowcase for a year—these are her beauty results.
John Frieda Frizz Ease Extra Strength Serum
This tried and true hair serum will have you ready to face the summer heat and humidity head on. Just one pump of this serum not only drastically reduces frizz, but also helps to repair dry or damaged hair. It’s also safe for color-treated hair, so you don’t have to worry about ruining your new summer highlights. Read more about why this serum has over 7,000 five-star ratings on Amazon.
Pro Tip: According to Reyman, oil-based products are best for medium and course hair since they help hydrate, moisturize, and soften. If you have fine hair, this serum probably isn’t for you since oil-based products can make fine hair limp, flat, and greasy.
K18 Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask
You may have come across a few bond-building hair care products, but according to Reyman, there’s only one on the market that actually does what it claims to do. K18’s molecular repair hair mask contains a patented amino acid sequence known as the K18Peptide which travels to the innermost layers of hair to reconnect broken keratin chains. By repairing these chains on a structural level (versus temporary bond repair), hair is restored to its original state renewing strength, softness, smoothness, and bounce.
Denman Large Paddle Hair Brush
Everyone should own this multi-functional, cushioned hairbrush. It’s suitable for all hair types, and can be used to detangle, smooth, blow dry, straighten, and style your hair when it’s both wet and dry. It has flexible, nylon round-tipped bristles which are gentle on your scalp and evenly spaced to separate hair for faster drying. Meanwhile, the large, air-cushioned pad brush gently responds to the contours of your head which makes hair easier to brush.
Davines OI Shampoo
In order to get the best results when you blow out hair, Reyman advises using a good, deep cleansing shampoo. This Italian-made, milky smooth shampoo is infused with nourishing Roucou Oil and Vitamin E which leave your hair soft, shiny, and voluminous. It’s also free from parabens and sulfates, making it a safe and gentle choice for all hair types.
Pro Tip: After shampooing, avoid using too much conditioner, which can weigh hair down.
Joico Weekend Hair Dry Shampoo
Few things are worse than when your days-old blowout starts looking greasy. A good dry shampoo absorbs excess oil at the roots, leaving your hair looking, feeling, and smelling like you just washed it. And if you color your hair, this dry shampoo actually helps extend the longevity of your color since you can cut back on washes and heat styling.
It’s A 10 Miracle Leave-In Product
Whether you’re looking for something to help repair your locks, protect them from the elements, or simply add some extra shine to your tresses post-blow dry, this all-in-one product gets the job done. It also promises to smooth and controls frizz, seal and protect color, detangle, prevent split ends, stop hair breakage, enhance natural body, and act as a flat iron and thermal protector. Use it on wet hair for extra shine or dry hair in place of styling cream. Beautiful!
