The Texas Chainsaw Massacre E1660857056702 2via hulu.com

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Released: 1974

Rated: R

What you’re in for: A chainsaw-wielding serial killer

This terrifying tale spawned seven more movies, so it’s kind of a big deal. It tells the story of Sally and Franklin Hardesty, who set out to visit their grandfather’s grave with three friends. Unfortunately, they cross paths with the Sawyer family … who happen to be cannibals. This is the flick that launched the horror legend Leatherface, who is truly the stuff of nightmares (and who makes the perfect scary Halloween costume). It also raised the bar for the slasher genre, without relying on special effects or gimmicks to create a truly terrifying film.

We love a franchise, and this one manages to keep the concept simple while scaring us half to death with each film. This was meant to be the last film in the series, but producer Jason Blum now says he wants to make more installments. Until then, we’ll keep The Forever Purge in our regular horror rotation.
