The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Released: 1974

Rated: R

What you’re in for: A chainsaw-wielding serial killer

This terrifying tale spawned seven more movies, so it’s kind of a big deal. It tells the story of Sally and Franklin Hardesty, who set out to visit their grandfather’s grave with three friends. Unfortunately, they cross paths with the Sawyer family … who happen to be cannibals. This is the flick that launched the horror legend Leatherface, who is truly the stuff of nightmares (and who makes the perfect scary Halloween costume). It also raised the bar for the slasher genre, without relying on special effects or gimmicks to create a truly terrifying film.

Why all the supernatural ruckus? The home was the site of a mass murder just a year earlier. The very idea that some of these events happened in real life will make you wonder what’s hiding within your own walls.

Maybe, but only if they can stop quarreling over who’s in charge and start fighting off the flesh-eating monsters. Before you watch, learn about Halloween’s spookiest monsters, including zombies.
