Southport, NC
"The friendliest seaside community"
We moved to Southport, NC a year-and-a-half ago, and this quaint little town is as close to heaven as you can get. Located on the mouth of the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean, Southport has many boutiques, antique shops, and local restaurants. The majority of the residents are retired, and the senior center is always buzzing with lots to do. Everyone has a kind word and no one is a stranger here.
The activities are endless and Southport is famous for their 4th of July celebration when the town is flooded with tourists. The town is also famous for filming many movies and TV shows, most notably: “Safe Haven,” “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” and “Under the Dome.”
My husband and I frequent Local’s Family Diner where everyone is treated like family. The well-priced meals are very tasty and the staff is very engaging.
We live in a townhouse community where the neighbors are phenomenal. We always look out for each other and know we can count on each other if needed.
The climate is awesome here and I call Southport the “Southern Cape Cod.” Southport contains the same small-town feel, yet we don’t have the harsh winters to contend with. The beach is four miles away, and walking along the water and visiting the shops downtown is delightful.
During the Christmas holidays, Santa and Mrs. Claus sit outside the stores downtown handing out candy and for pictures.
Coni’s Story
Southport is just enough off the beaten path that a visitor is surprised when they arrive here to meet very nice town folk for such a small beach community. It has such a warm and relaxing atmosphere, it’s almost magical. Downtown, by the water, has porch swings scattered about to help in the relaxing.
When a person arrives here, they literally do not want to leave. Case in point, I retired from working at Military Ocean Terminal where every two years has a change in leadership. No matter what part of the country they came from, they end up making Southport their final stop. They end up retiring here when their service time is completed.
I don’t know of any other community where the fire chief loves to cook and does a lot of fund raising just for that purpose. You really have to try his spaghetti!
