4 Foods to Eat When You Can’t Brush Your Teeth

Foods that are firm or crisp help to clean the teeth as they’re eaten. Here are a handful that will help you maintain healthy teeth on the go.

1. Apples (otherwise known as nature’s toothbrush)

2. Raw carrots

3. Celery

4. Popcorn (unsweetened)

For best results, make ‘detergent’ foods the final food you eat in your meal if you know you can’t brush your teeth straight after eating.

  1.  Good for teeth, bad for gums. Eating (un-cut) apples regularly can increase the speed at which the gums recede. Also, the hard, sharp skins from popcorn kernels often get stuck between the gum and the teeth and can cause serious damage to the periodontal ligaments that hold the tooth in the socket.

    1. That’s why I always disliked eating apples unless they were cut into slices, whenever I was given a whole apple I could only manage small chunks at a time and never reached the core, as I always felt it was putting too much pressure on my teeth :/ I prefer eating the softer fruits (bananas, pears, peaches, plums, melons and kiwis) because of it. I even try to eat yogurt with fruit chucks already in them, as it’s a quick way to get the nutrients from both into my system.

    2. That’s not true at all.If you cut the apple it won’t damage your gums
There is not much difference between chewing on apple pieces or celery sticks then brushing your teeth. In fact if you brush too hard you will damage your gums.Carrots are great for cleaning teeth, that’s why rabbits have such clean teeth.

      1. That’s why the above guest stated “eating (uncut) apples” will damage gums. Did not say eating apples in general is bad for gums.

  2. Oh yeah, apples! Are there any apple-flavored toothpastes? What about celery? Celery is like an apple, too. It has natural acids which can clean teeth while being chewed; as well as carrots. However, brushing your teeth with whitening toothpaste is still advisable since apples contain sugar just like other fruits. Perhaps they can be considered as ‘mini-toothbrush’ for that matter.

    1. Yes apples do contain natural sugars but all you have to do is drink water after you have eaten one.My grandfather never brushed his teeth or flossed and had all his teeth until the age of 92.Much of our dental make up is genetic.Look at African people for example.Look how white their teeth are and many of them rarely brush their teeth.
