Summer will be here before you know it, so now’s the perfect time to stock up on bathing suits, sunscreen and cover-ups. As a plus-size woman, I have a love-hate relationship with bathing suit shopping. Usually, plus-size swimsuits either have a top that’s too small, a bottom that’s too big or they simply lack the cute styles I prefer. Its claim to fame is that it’s supposed to make you look and feel “10 pounds lighter in 10 seconds.” In a society where people are obsessed with vanity and that irresistible va-va-voom factor, it comes as no surprise (at least to me) that Miraclesuit swimwear has gained a devoted following on social media. Fans share photos and testimonials praising its “excellent fit” and “flattering” qualities. According to users, it’s the key to the impossible task of looking thinner in a swimsuit.

The contouring Miraclesuit comes in various silhouettes and prints, but I chose the classic black version for my Miraclesuit review. The brand offers three different support levels for its shapewear pieces, and the Miraclesuit specifically boasts a “serious support” ranking of 3/3. I placed my order and about a week later the suit arrived at my door. Upon opening it, I discovered a sleek black one-piece neatly folded in plastic. The fabric felt both stretchy and soft to the touch, which made me eager to put it on.

The material has a slightly thicker texture compared to the average bathing suit, ensuring everything stays in place both at rest and in motion.

Unlike many standard one-pieces, this particular design offers full-butt coverage, leaving no area too exposed. The supportive straps effectively lift the chest, both in and out of the water. The fit empowers shoppers to feel comfortable and confident in a bathing suit for their body type without compromising on style. How we tested it

For this Miraclesuit review, I tested various aspects of the bathing suit including the fit, comfort level, support and drying time. Initially, it wasn’t too comfortable when I put it on. I followed the brand’s recommendation and ordered my usual size of 2X. While I expected some level of compression, I wasn’t fully aware of how it would feel. It didn’t resemble wearing a corset or Spanx swimwear necessarily, but there was definite pressure around my midriff. I couldn’t envision myself wearing it comfortably for extended periods—I would say an hour or two at most.

However, after looking in the mirror, I noticed that it cinched in my waist, accentuating my curves and breasts in a flattering way. Regarding the claim of appearing “10 pounds lighter in 10 minutes,” I didn’t personally experience that effect during my Miraclesuit review. My body looked the same but shifted in different directions to create the illusion of more “societally acceptable” proportions (such as a smaller waist and larger hips), similar to what plus-size activewear typically does.

I felt fantastic in the water, and the swimsuit maintained its shape without sagging or shifting, even after doing some laps and handstands. The best part? I didn’t get a wedgie, which typically ranks high on my list of complaints with bathing suits. When I emerged from the pool, it took approximately 10 minutes of laying in the sun for the suit to completely dry. Considering the slightly thicker material, I anticipated it would retain more water and require a longer drying time. However, the quick-dry feature left me thoroughly impressed.

The brand recommends sizing up in Miraclesuit swimwear if you prefer a less restrictive fit. However, based on my experience, I believe that the compression benefits wouldn’t be as effective if the swimsuit was loose, since it’s the snugness that creates the illusion of a cinched waist and a smooth midriff.

How do you know if a swimsuit is too small?
