Forget Tattoos: Here’s What You Need to Know About the Permanent Jewelry Trend

Updated: Jan. 05, 2023

This new jewelry trend will ensure that you never have to take off your most important pieces ever again

We all have that one piece of jewelry that we hardly ever take off. Whether you’re hesitant to take it off because of its sentimental value, a fear of losing it, or because you’ve just worn it so long that it’s become a part of you, we totally get it. Luckily, TikTok has highlighted a solution that’s both practical and relatively affordable: permanent jewelry. What exactly is this latest fashion trend?

What is permanent jewelry?

Simply put, permanent jewelry is jewelry that you can’t take off. Rather than closing a bracelet or necklace with a traditional clasp, a jeweler will weld the two ends together. The whole process is painless and only takes a few minutes, according to Catbird, a New York City-based jewelry store that specializes in permanent bracelets. Known for their affordable jewelry, Catbird offers clients a variety of solid gold bracelet options which start around $98.

There are plenty of perks for turning a meaningful piece of jewelry into something permanent. For starters, you’ll never have to worry about misplacing it or having it fall down the drain. And by opting for a delicate, solid gold piece, you don’t have to worry about whether or not your jewelry will make it through TSA or if your jewelry will turn your skin green.

There are a couple of things you’ll want to consider when it comes to permanently welded jewelry. If you need certain medical procedures, like an MRI or surgery, you’ll likely be required to remove all jewelry. In that case, you’d have to cut the jewelry off.

Types of permanent jewelry

Bracelets are currently the most popular pieces being offered, and the only pieces offered by Catbird. However, other jewelers may offer the option to have necklaces, anklets or rings welded on as well.

Where can you get permanent jewelry?

This trend is still in its early stages and therefore only offered by a handful of jewelers around the country. However, as it becomes more popular, we expect more retailers to offer this service.

You can start by asking your jeweler if they will weld a piece of jewelry on for you. Or, if you happen to be in New York City, you can make an appointment with popular studios such as Catbird or Astrid & Miyu.

Some retailers may charge a flat rate for the piece of jewelry you choose while others may charge by the inch for a gold chain and offer small stones or charms for an additional fee. You can expect to pay around $100 for a solid gold bracelet and up to several hundred dollars for heavier bracelets, necklaces or pieces of jewelry with precious or semi-precious stones.

Can you make permanent jewelry?

Welding a piece of jewelry onto your body isn’t something you’ll want to DIY. Your best bet is to work with a jeweler in order to create a custom piece.

Keep in mind that the best time to buy fine jewelry is between March and early May when jewelers are quiet. Your jeweler or a retailer who specializes in permanent welded jewelry will help you find the best style and fit for your budget.
