The designer
Meghan Markle surprised everyone by choosing a designer headquartered in Paris instead of England. However, the designer of her dress, Clare Waight Keller, is British. Markle chose Keller as a tribute to her new country.
Tribute to the Commonwealth
The flowers sewn into her veil represent the 53 nations of the Commonwealth. Both Meghan and Harry wanted to pay tribute to Harry’s role as Youth Ambassador for the Commonwealth on their wedding day. Keller suggested using the wildflower from each nation when Markle told her she wanted to include a piece of all 53 countries in her veil. Harry actually didn’t know that Meghan had chosen to include the nations in her veil and was “over the moon” when he found out on their wedding day. The veil
The silk veil is 16 feet long and took 500 hours to embroider. Each flower was appliqued onto the veil, giving it dimension and texture. Markle only met with Keller a few times to review sketches for the veil before she gave Keller her full trust. After that, Markle didn’t see the final design until the morning of her wedding.
Her something blue
There is a small piece of blue fabric stitched into Meghan’s veil, which she considered her “something blue” on her wedding day. It was a small piece of fabric from the dress she wore on her first date with Prince Harry.
A little something extra
There are two extra flowers embroidered into Meghan’s veil that mean something extra special to her. One is the California poppy to represent where she’s from, and the other is the Wintersweet, which grows on the gounds of Kensington Palace.
