Memorial Day weekend is the time to buy
If you’ve been saving every hard-earned dollar of your stimulus check waiting for the best sales of the year, your wait is almost over—huge Memorial Day sales are right around the corner. “Three-day weekends are always great for sales, but Memorial Day weekend happens to be one of the best when it comes to deep discounts,” says smart-shopping expert Trae Bodge. “This long weekend offers a fantastic opportunity for consumers to save on bigger investment items. You can expect generous rebates and discounts as high as 60 percent off regular retail prices.” We’re talking fabulous Memorial Day furniture sales, mattress sales, appliance sales, and TV sales, to name a few.
To score the absolute best deals, you’ll need to do two important things: Keep an open mind when it comes to retailers, and stack promotions. “Don’t take sale prices at face value,” Bodge advises. “Make sure to check your favorite deal sites for exclusive promotions or cashback deals that you can stack with retailer sales.” One more thing to be on the lookout for this year? Travel-related deals, which she says will likely pop up as the American tourism economy rebounds with the uptick in available vaccines.
But don’t limit yourself to booking a fabulous vacation or buying the best mattress on the market at an amazing discount. You’ll also score some of the best deals on products you’ll use every day, like normally pricey shoes, skin care, and even food. Here’s what you’ll want to put on your shopping list.
Don’t wait to buy that new washer and dryer set, range, or dishwasher, because the days leading up to Memorial Day will be better than any other sale we’ve seen in 2021.
Maytag: May is Maytag month, which means shoppers can get up to a $200 rebate via prepaid card by mail or save up to $200 via instant rebate with the purchase of select Maytag appliances on the brand’s website or through some of their retail partners. The promotion will run from April 29 through June 2 and make this already affordable brand even more budget-friendly.
BestBuy: The electronics superstore will be offering hundreds off its most popular appliances—including refrigerators, washing machines, and more—with discounts ranging from 10 to 40 percent off usual prices. It’ll also be stacking its Appliances Outlet landing page with hundreds of new deals at up to 40 percent off. BestBuy offers some of the biggest appliance sales each year, so it’s worth waiting with bated breath to see exactly which models will be marked down.
Lowe’s: Bookmark the Lowe’s Memorial Day Sales landing page, because that’s where you’ll find appliances at up to a third off their usual prices. Pro tip: This retailer offers an aggressive price-match policy that spans most other major retailers. Go in with a plan by knowing the brands that make the most reliable appliances, according to Consumer Reports.
Home Depot: If it’s time to replace some big-ticket home items, this superstore is another place you’ll definitely want to be over the holiday weekend. While specific deals are still under wraps for 2021, last year’s deals included discounts of up to $1,700 off on fridges, ovens, and washer/dryer sets. You’ll also save big-time on outdoor items like lawnmowers, grills, and patio furniture. Talk about setting the stage for one great summer!
Mattresses and bedding
Looking to upgrade your sleep? Memorial Day weekend will be a treasure trove of discounts on mattresses of all price points and styles. “I am hearing some buzz about exciting mattress sales like those from Mattress Firm,” Bodge says. “The sales will be the ‘very best they’ve ever been over Memorial Day,’ according to my sources at the company.”
MattressFirm: Expect up to 40 percent off Mattress Firm’s popular mattresses in the days leading up to Memorial Day, with the entire weekend seeing a virtual parade of seldom-discounted mattresses at rock-bottom prices.
Leesa: This year’s Memorial Day sales will net you up to $400 off mattresses, plus discounts on sheet sets, as well as free no-contact delivery.

Home decor and linens
Memorial Day weekend is typically one of the best times of the year to stock up on sheets, bedding, towels, and home decor items like kitchenware and lamps. “It’s between the rush for Mother’s Day gifts and a little before Father’s Day,” explains Daniel Wilson, a retail advisor for CoreGroup. “That means retailers are going to push their clearance items from Mother’s Day to make shelf space for seasonal items, and try to score a few more sales for Father’s Day, which typically sees less bedding and bath movement when compared to other sectors.”
American Blossom Linens: This eco-friendly line is a favorite for lovers of organic cotton and magazine-worthy style, and offers sustainably made and chemical-free bedding with temperature control. Throughout Memorial Day weekend, you can score a rare 20 percent off everything on the site, including all of their luxury organic linens.
