All Quiet on the Western Front

Based on Erich Maria Remarque’s 1929 novel by the same name, All Quiet on the Western Front is an epic film that shines a spotlight on the futility of war. The German film directed by Lewis Berger and starring Felix Kammerer, Daniel Brühl and Albrecht Schuch was nominated for eight additional Academy Awards including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Cinematography.
Avatar: The Way of Water

The long-awaited sequel to James Cameron’s 2009 film, Avatar, Avatar: The Way of the Water follows Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana’s return as Jake and Neytiri as they are forced to work together to protect the home of the Na’vi against a familiar threat.
Avatar: The Way of the Water is not only nominated for Best Picture, but it is also up for awards for Best Sound, Best Production Design and Best Visual Effects. Though it is still in theaters, you can expect to enjoy it from the comfort of your living room by way of Disney+ later in 2023.
The Banshees of Inisherin

Written and directed by legendary Irish filmmaker Martin McDonagh, The Banshees of Inisherin tells the story of two lifelong friends who struggle with the consequences in the aftermath of severing ties in their relationship.
The second-most nominated film (tied with All Quiet on the Western Front), The Banshees of Inisherin is also a contender for Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, among others. Elvis

Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis tells the life story of the undisputed King of Rock and Roll through the lens of the man who controlled every aspect of his career. This electric, energetic film is nominated in eight categories, including Best Actor and Best Costume Design. Everything Everywhere All At Once

Leading the pack in terms of nominations, Everything Everywhere All At Once is nominated in 11 categories, which marks an impressive first foray into the Oscar arena for Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the directing duo behind the film.
The film chronicles the tale of a Chinese-American immigrant who discovers during an audit by the IRS that there is a parallel universe containing multiple versions of herself that she must connect with to stop the pending destruction of the universe. The Fabelmans

The Fabelmans, co-written by Tony Kushner, is based on the early life of its director, Steven Spielberg, and tells the story of his beginnings as a filmmaker through the fictional character of Sammy Fableman, played by Gabriel LaBelle.

Tár

Written and directed by Todd Field, Tár stars two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett as fictional composer and conductor Lydia Tár, whose professional life and reputation crumble in the aftermath of revelations surrounding her personal life.

Top Gun: Maverick

Thirty-six years after starring in the original Top Gun, Tom Cruise reprises his role in Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel directed by Joseph Kosinski, which also stars Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly. The film tells the story of Maverick, who is forced to face demons from his past while training the latest group of Top Gun graduates.

Triangle of Sadness

The English-language feature film debut for Ruben Östlund, Triangle of Sadness is a satirical black comedy that dissects the superficiality of social hierarchy, exposing the world of beauty, wealth and privilege.

Women Talking

Written and directed by Sarah Polley, Women Talking is based on Miriam Toews’s 2018 novel of the same name. The film, like the novel, is based on a true story about women living in a secluded religious community who struggle to reconcile their difficult reality with the faith in which they’ve been raised. The film is also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, and if you’ve yet to enjoy it, be sure to check it out in theaters before it disappears.
