Sometimes the best solutions are the easiest and most affordable. (Isn’t it great when that happens?) In fact, you might even have what you need to get rid of puffy eyes right in your house. These tried-and-true remedies could help you get rid of puffy eyes in 30 minutes or less.

Puffy eye remedy: Cold spoons

Chill two teaspoons in the freezer or fridge for about 10 minutes. Then, while lying down with your head slightly elevated, place a teaspoon over each eye. Keep the teaspoons in place until they feel warm. If the puffiness is still there, repeat the process. Cold spoons are very similar to ice globes, which are another effective way to reduce eye puffiness.

Puffy eye remedy: Cucumbers

Because cucumbers have a high water content, they’re great at rehydrating your eye area. And, according to Dr. Hill-Bennett, they’re particularly effective if your puffy eyes are a result of a crying jag. So, how can you get rid of puffy eyes with a cucumber? First take off the outer skin, as it may have pesticides that can irritate your skin. Thinly slice the cucumber, place one round over each eye. The combination of coolness, moisture, and a dose of vitamin K (cucumbers have a ton) helps improve blood circulation, while the veggie moisturizes your eye and reduces puffiness.

How to prevent puffy eyes

Beyond choosing the right beauty products, you can ward off puffy eyes by changing your diet, says Dr. Hill-Bennett, and this is definitely something to consider if those puffy eyes are a regular occurrence. “Increase potassium intake with potassium-rich foods like bananas, beans, yogurt, and dark leafy green vegetables,” she suggests. Bauer adds that dehydration is also a common culprit. That’s why she suggests drinking 32 ounces of water with lemon every day, then waiting 30 minutes before eating and drinking anything else.

Sleep is also essential. You’ll want to get enough of it—and make sure you’re doing it right. That might be as simple as adding a pillow to your setup. When you slightly elevate your head, you allow fluids to drain through your system, instead of settling under your eyes and then creating bags or a puffy appearance. And speaking of pillows, you may also want to rethink your pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases can leach moisture from your skin and hair.
