It’s important to do your research when looking for reliable appliances. Thankfully, Consumer Reports has come to the rescue with their second annual Appliance Brand Reliability Rankings, which shows “how reliable one brand is relative to another across multiple appliances.” The results from the Consumer Reports survey are from members who bought laundry and kitchen appliances between 2009 and 2019. The number of appliances purchased totals more than 592,000.

In order to calculate predicted reliability, Consumer Reports asked members about certain appliance products, specifically if appliances broke multiple times or didn’t perform as expected.  Consumer Reports then compiled the information from members and estimated “how a given brand’s new models will hold up over the first five years of use.” On the flip side, make sure you avoid the 15 worst products Consumer Reports has ever tested.

However, what should be noted is that there were a few measures kept in place to keep reliability and fairness in check. “For each brand, the Average Predicted Reliability Score has been adjusted to account for differences among types of appliances. A brand that earns relatively high marks for its French-door refrigerators, for example, will get a bump in its score because French-door models are less reliable than other refrigerator types,” Consumer Reports explains. “Without this statistical adjustment, a brand that makes only top-freezer refrigerators—the most reliable type—would have an unfair advantage over brands that make multiple types.” Read on for a list of trustworthy brands when purchasing appliances.

Speed Queen

Speed Queen made the top spot this year with a total score of 84. Consumer Reports showcased the appliance brand’s excellence in top-load agitator washing machines and electric dryers. However, Consumer Reports also noted that their “predicted reliability ratings are not an indicator of performance” which means that while Speed Queen has high ratings for washers and dryers, unfortunately in lab tests the machines don’t perform as well as you would expect. Consumer Reports recommends that “even when you settle on a reliable brand, you’ll want to check our full ratings to pick a specific model.” If you haven’t cleaned your washing machine in a month, you should probably do so ASAP.

The German high-end manufacturer snagged the second spot with a totals core of 69. The appliance brand received an excellent rating in dishwashers and compact dryers, while a very good rating in built-in refrigerators, electric wall ovens, and compact washing machines. On the flip side, the brand rated fair in electric cooktops and poor in gas cooktops. Do you know the 21 ways you’re shortening the life of your dishwasher?

LG moved up a ranking and finished in third with a total score of 66. For appliances, gas and electric dryers received an excellent rating while compact dryers received a very good rating. Electric wall ovens also received an excellent rating. The brand ranked well across the board and the lowest rating was good. Did you know these are the two worst laundry detergents you can buy?
