190 Fun Team Names for Work, Sports and More
Team names matter, and there’s scientific proof of it. A 2021 study by Osaka Prefecture University found that in competition, your team name can affect not only how your team performs but also how opposing teams perform against you. And a Journal of the Association for Information Systems study found that in the workplace, simply naming a team can play a key role in team building. That’s true regardless of the context, according to team-building and company-culture expert Joe Frodsham. But coming up with fun team names can be a challenge.
Whether you’re looking for fun team names for a work group, a sports league, a trivia team or a team-building project, the best group name ideas can seem elusive in the moment and can take a while to crack. Fortunately, we’ve collected a whole bunch of good team name options for you. So read on because one of the following creative team names is your first step to victory.

What’s the best way to come up with fun team names?
“We all need, even yearn for, identity,” Frodsham says, and team names help foster a group identity among members. Since that’s critical to team building, Frodsham suggests getting the ball rolling with a team-naming exercise—one that includes all team members sharing their group names and ideas.
In the interest of facilitating intra-team trust, Frodsham recommends ensuring that all team members are equipped with “at least high-level information” as to the group’s mission and purpose. And all should be encouraged to participate. “You want everyone to feel heard,” he emphasizes. This is crucial for buy-in as well as an opportunity for individuals to showcase their creativity.
At the same time, however, and particularly in the workplace, Frodsham advises that whoever is facilitating the process gently direct it by providing examples of the sort of good team names that will be considered appropriate in tenor and subject matter. You want your team to come up with tons of fun team names—but in a work-appropriate way.
