Astrology for the New Year

A New Year’s resolution is, fundamentally, the recognition that we want to be better versions of ourselves. It’s about figuring out the best way to harness our energy and our potential, and having some foresight as to what the new year may have in store for us can help with that. If coming up with goals for 2023 has you stumped, turn to astrology for New Year’s resolutions straight from the stars.

“Astrology can be used as our personal cosmic guide to setting timely intentions on New Year’s Eve that can unfold throughout the year, which is why it’s helpful to look at the astrological forecast when setting our New Year’s resolutions,” says Liz Simmons, a professional astrologer and tarot reader. The astrology for the new year is embedded in transformation, thanks to a once-in-a-lifetime planetary transit (aka movement). In March 2023, Pluto will move into Aquarius for the first time since the 1700s, bringing with it an energy of change. But this cosmic event isn’t the only thing to consider. Individual signs will also have a lot to look forward to in the new year.

The stars are the path to making your New Year’s wishes come true, thanks to the zodiac. Before you start planning your New Year’s Eve party, take a closer look at the cosmos to learn what New Year’s resolution has the most Zodiac compatibility with your sign. And once you’re finished checking out the astrology for the new year, take a look at your zodiac power color to inspire your New Year’s Eve makeup and outfit.

What this means for you

When looking at astrology for New Year’s goals, Simmons doesn’t focus on the sun sign (you know, the answer to “What’s your sign?”). Instead, she says it’s best to look at your rising sign.

“The most accurate way to gauge our New Year’s resolutions through an astrological lens is by using our rising sign, also known as the ascendant, when looking at the upcoming transits,” she explains. “Our rising sign is what we should look at when reading our horoscopes, so we should also use this aspect in our chart to determine the most significant transits and how they will impact our lives throughout 2023.”

Simmons also recommends being mindful of new moons for setting the intention of your resolutions. “I recommend looking for new moons to set new intentions in each house that corresponds with bringing something that you desire to fruition,” she notes.

In astrology, a “house” is based on the location and time of your birth and refers to an area of life or experience. The second house, for instance, focuses on values, financial security, money and personal property, while the 10th house represents accomplishments, reputation, status, legacy and career. “Since the full moons represent the culmination of a cycle in each house, you can use this lunar phase as a checkpoint for your progress,” she adds.

Aries (March 21–April 19): Start a side hustle

At the beginning of 2023, there will be a strong Jupiter in Aries transit, says Charlotte Kirsten, a professional astrologer with a master’s in cultural astrology and metaphysical sciences. A transit is the movement of planets and, in astrology, refers to when a planet crosses paths with your zodiac sign. This particular transit is associated with abundance and good fortune, and Kirsten says that if your sign is Aries, you “will be gifted with a newfound sense of determination, freedom and courage to finally make your larger-than-life goals a reality.”

Now is not the time to play it safe—think bigger and better than ever. “If you’ve been dreaming of starting a side hustle or creating a new stream of income, 2023 is the year to do so,” she explains. So grab a planner made for high achievers with side gigs, determine your top career strengths and then put your goals into action.

Taurus (April 20–May 20): Make new friends

Get ready to get social. This year is “all about friendships and connections for Taurus,” says Kirsten. Taurus’s ruling planet—Venus—will be heavily in the spotlight in the new year, prompting a close examination of self-worth, self-esteem and insecurities, and a look at how they play out in your relationships. “The cosmic ox has a deep desire to be valued, loved and appreciated for what it brings to the table, so it only makes sense your New Year’s resolution revolves around letting your true self shine,” she says. “Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there, ditch toxic relationships and find a community that loves you for you.”

Not sure where to start? Consider buddying up to someone whose zodiac sign is a friendship match with yours. Then start small, like a chat over coffee. Before you know it, you’ll be exchanging friendship necklaces.

Gemini (May 21–June 20): Start a podcast or YouTube channel

If you’re a Gemini, astrology for the new year points toward resolutions that’ll let you make the most of your winning personality. “Gemini’s charming, quirky and irresistibly fun nature makes them super likable, [and] their witty one-liners make them excellent conversational hosts,” Kirsten says. These qualities will translate to success on the digital airwaves, so the goal of launching a podcast or YouTube channel is an excellent one.

That said, Geminis might need to keep their dualistic nature in check in order to manifest this resolution. “Ruled by Mercury—the planet of possibilities—you can’t help but see opportunity in everything, which makes setting New Year’s resolutions fairly difficult when you want to do it all,” Kirsten explains. “With so many opportunities available to you, it can seem like you’re constantly chasing the next shiny thing that catches your attention.” To make podcast or vlogging dreams come true, Kirsten suggests committing to a single goal. (And, you know, getting some pro-level equipment to help your show shine.)

Cancer (June 21–July 22): Heal past wounds

Cancers are the nurturers and doting mothers of the zodiac. And they will stop at nothing to make sure a connection stands the test of time. But this ride-or-die sign’s loyalty, unwavering trust and giving nature “often put them in the firing line for being taken advantage of,” says Kirsten. The good news is that 2023 is an excellent time for Cancers to take a look within and heal from past wounds, hurts and disappointments.

“[The new year] gives Cancers a chance to reinvent themselves and reframe their narrative,” she explains. “Working through these heavy emotions through journaling could provide Cancer the mental release they’ve been so desperately seeking.” Speaking of making connections, here’s why we kiss at midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Leo (July 23–Aug. 22): Volunteer

“Lively and vivacious, these lovable lions know exactly what it takes to become a beacon of light for others,” says Kirsten. Ruled by the sun, Leos are typically very outgoing and aren’t afraid to have new experiences or spread their light, which is why volunteering is the best New Year’s resolution for Leos. “Leos make excellent volunteers, as they channel their warm, friendly and infectious energy to inject spontaneous fun into any situation.” In 2023, aspects of the Jupiter transit will invite travel opportunities, so Leos may want to take their volunteer efforts abroad.

Virgo (Aug. 23–Sept. 22): Practice gratitude and mindfulness

Virgos tend to be analytical and data-driven, and they pride themselves on their strong work ethic and can-do attitude. “But with that comes the potential for some serious burnout,” says Kirsten. “With Saturn hitting many of Virgo’s major houses, 2023 calls this go-getter to slow down, move more consciously and practice gratitude.”

When plotting a New Year’s resolution for 2023, focus on living intentionally and setting goals that will impact important areas of your life. As for your new mindfulness practice, try meditation, mindfulness cards or a gratitude journal to get in the right frame of mind. Libra (Sept. 23–Oct. 22): Get out of your comfort zone

For Libras, this past year was heavily focused on maintaining balance, peace and harmony. But the coming year promises change, encouraging Libras to “expand outside their comfort zone and home in on something that’s going to broaden their horizons,” says Kirsten. She recommends creating a vision board of things that spark inspiration—and make you a little uncomfortable—such as going back to school, traveling and working abroad. But getting out of your comfort zone could also mean trying new cuisines, joining that dance-based workout class you’ve been too afraid to try or taking the plunge on a new skill, like pottery, writing poetry or becoming a certified yoga instructor.

The opportunities for getting out of your comfort zone are endless (and personal). Need a pep talk? This confidence boost in book form is the best book for your zodiac sign this year. Read up, believe in yourself and don’t be afraid to finally go for it!

Scorpio (Oct. 23–Nov. 21): Get creative

Scorpios are the embodiment of passion, and according to Kirsten, they’re in for a major influx of creativity in the new year. No strangers to hard work and effort, Scorpios should “lean in to a creative hobby that will rejuvenate their mind, body and soul,” she says. Her recommendation? Tap into a creative outlet, such as painting, drawing, writing, sewing or cooking, to let go of everyday stress and stretch your passionate side.

Sagittarius (Nov. 22–Dec. 21): Fall in love with fitness

“Engaging and inspiring, this wanderlust-driven sign is known for its freedom-seeking and independent nature,” says Kirsten. Sagittarians are also fueled by ambition, and with fire as their zodiac element, they know what they want and aren’t afraid to break the rules to get it. Harness that energy to give your health a boost in 2023. Kirsten recommends setting a resolution to fall back in love with fitness, not just for the results but also for how good it feels to nurture yourself.

In fact, you might want to add a few more goals to your list. The new year “asks Sagittarius to take baby steps to better health—think drinking more water, taking more steps [a Fitbit can help] and swapping out processed foods for leaner greens,” says Kirsten, adding that taking care of yourself in mindful ways is just as important as the bigger goals you love to cross off your list.

Capricorn (Dec. 22–Jan. 19): Celebrate your accomplishments

“It can be super easy for this hardworking, uber-independent and pragmatic earth sign to see their successes,” says Kirsten. Ruled by sensible Saturn, Capricorns embody responsibility, but that can make it hard for them to truly feel satisfied with their accomplishments. “They’re so focused on the big picture that they forget what they’ve already achieved, hurriedly racing onto the next one,” she says.

The coming year is the best time for Capricorns to make a habit of celebrating their achievements, including small wins. If this is your sign, go ahead and give yourself a pat on the back, a gold star or a button proclaiming your accomplishments. And to make sure you stick to this resolution, write your intentions in a New Year’s caption on social media, then ask your friends and followers to hold you to it.

Aquarius (Jan. 20–Feb. 18): Book more solo trips

Ruled by the free-thinking planet Uranus, Aquarians won’t be pinned down in the coming year. According to Kirsten, a Jupiter transit landing in the ninth house—which is related to foreign travel—makes a literal journey of self-discovery the perfect New Year’s resolution. With the ability to march to the beat of their own drum, Aquarians are encouraged to fly solo, both locally and internationally, in 2023. Not sure where to go? Pisces (Feb. 19–March 20): Revamp your wardrobe

“Ruled by Neptune—the planet of illusion and escapism—this visionary fish uses their aesthetic as a form of self-expression, and 2023 gives them the chance to completely reinvent their style identity,” says Kirsten. That’s why astrology for the New Year points Pisces toward a goal of revamping their wardrobe either with styles bought off the rack or created by hand.

“If the visionary fish can channel their inner creator to physically make the items of their dreams, even better,” she says, adding that the more input Pisces has in the creation process, the more meaning that object carries.
