What the Spring Equinox Means for Your Zodiac
The spring equinox marks the astronomical new year. It's the perfect time to start something new!
New year, new horoscope
It’s been a long, hard winter for all of us, but spring is just around the corner! March 20th is the spring equinox, the astronomical first day of spring and this new season doesn’t just bring showers and flowers: it’s also a time of renewal, rebirth, and sweeping changes for all. As the midpoint between the winter solstice (the shortest day of the year) and the summer solstice (the longest day), “the equinox is a time for balance,” says Susan Levitt, astrologer, author, tarot card reader, and feng shui consultant. Astrologer and co-host of the events astrology podcast Allegedly Astrology Dana DeFranco adds, “Horoscopes for the spring equinox can help each sign understand the impact of global or cultural events on their personal lives for the year ahead.” What does all this mean? That March 20th is going to have a profound effect on your life. Wondering exactly what the equinox is? Check out these facts about the spring equinox.
Aries (March 21-April 19)
The sun moves into Aries on the spring equinox, meaning a burst of energy for this already-quite-energetic fire sign. “Aries is a fire sign and a natural leader, so it’s time to take action, be creative, and express yourself,” says Levitt. DeFranco agrees, adding that the new astrological year is a great time for Aries to check-in on themselves and their goals. “The next two years are a prime time for committing to reaching your highest goals. Getting involved with causes you feel most passionately about will allow you to wield control for a positive cause and develop greater compassion for yourself and others.” Perhaps Aries working on their two-year plans would benefit from understanding the tarot card associated with their sign.
DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Donate any possessions that you no longer use.
Taurus (April 20-May 20)
Our astrologers agree that Taurus, as an earth sign, finds great joy in sensory pleasures, and needs to feel secure in order to be happy. For the spring equinox, bulls will be thinking about how best to meet their needs and pursue their own happiness. DeFranco explains that the equinox will bring “flashes of insight that may change your perception of what you need and how you earn. The answers may reveal themselves to you in your dreams or in conversations with friends.” Levitt suggests shaking up your routine, recommending that Taurus “get creative with what Taurus loves: the beauty of the earth, good food, arts, crafts, and the sensual life.” Sounds like our bull friends should find out the best hobby for their zodiac.
DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Review your oldest posts on social media and reflect on how much you’ve changed throughout the years. Absorb this knowledge and allow yourself to change again.
Gemini (May 21-June 20)
Gemini are the prime conversationalists of the zodiac; these air signs are interested in everything and always have an opinion to share! The spring equinox is a time to reflect on and develop those opinions and how they communicate them, say our astrologers. “Right now you’re feeling more vulnerable and reactive than usual and will need to contend with your own humanity if you truly want to grow in the world,” says DeFranco. “Situations at work may come up now that allow you to gain greater insight into your higher beliefs. You can understand both sides and still take a stand.” Levitt stresses the importance of Gemini developing their ideas and continuing to learn. “Communicate, network, write, and stay current with what’s new on the Internet,” she says. Gemini loves playing with new ideas and making connections, but it’s worth them examining their own beliefs from time to time. This equinox, a moment of renewal, is the perfect time to do just that. Gemini can start by finding out the perfect classic book for them based on their zodiac sign.
DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Fight the impulse to be clever by asking yourself what it is that you want to be true.
Cancer (June 21-July 22)
As a water sign, Cancers are very sensitive crabs who feel things deeply. However, this can actually be an asset, as DeFranco explains. “Cancer is the most tenacious sign of the zodiac, which is an under-reported strength resulting from the ability to contend with their own emotions. Keep that in mind right now as your emotions feel more volatile than ever, especially related to your career and the motives of your boss or coworkers. People aren’t out to get you.” Levitt recommends that crabs re-focus their attention on their homes. “Cancer can create a loving home, so time to focus on cleaning and redecorating. Redo and revitalize everything, from kitchen plates to linens on the beds.” Even crabs sleep better in fresh sheets! March might also bring a nice surprise for both single and coupled-up crabs: DeFranco notes that your partner might be promoted, or you may receive a cash windfall. Win-win! This is the best pet for every zodiac sign.
DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Put yourself in the position to be lucky.
Leo (July 23-August 22)
As Levitt explains, “Leo is a fire sign who is naturally creative and dramatic.” Extroverted and expressive, Leos love to be the center of attention, so it’s likely that these pandemic months of reduced social interaction are taking their toll. “Your urge to merge is especially strong right now,” says DeFranco. “It’s a good time to share your deepest secrets and longings with a trusted partner. Let them see you ugly-cry.” Leos feel very strongly about their beliefs and take their values seriously, but they aren’t the only ones who feel strongly. The spring equinox is the perfect time to start something new, and Levitt suggests that Leo “start creative projects to share with the world.” DeFranco recommends a more mindful approach to disagreements and open communication. DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Do an activity that brought you joy as a child.
Virgo (August 23-September 22)
As earth signs, Virgos love all things domestic, and the spring equinox is a great time to focus on healing and renewing the home sphere. “Clean out your kitchen cabinets, eat organic food, even start a garden,” says Levitt. DeFranco notes that partnered Virgos will want to focus on intimacy. “It’s a great time to get physical, share secrets or open a shared bank account,” she says. “The universe has gifted you with rose-colored glasses during this period, making it a wonderful time to fall in love with someone new or reinvigorate your current relationship.” Focusing on health at home (both physical and emotional) will help Virgos deal with the possibility of extra stress at work. “Consider how your career is tied to your self-perception and identify a middle ground,” says DeFranco. Good advice for every sign! Virgos will want to know the best houseplant for their zodiac sign.

Libra (September 23-October 22)
Libra loves balance in all aspects of their life, and will often bend over backward or compromise their own needs in order to maintain harmony in their relationships. This spring equinox, however, Libras will be focusing more on how their relationships make them feel, instead of how they make other people feel. “Strong feelings related to your core beliefs bubble to the surface and you may feel more combative than usual,” says DeFranco. “It’s OK to lose your cool sometimes, just be honest with yourself when it happens.” Levitt recommends reconnecting with friends and family (most likely online due to the ongoing pandemic) in order to strengthen relationships. Boundaries make relationships stronger, and Libra could do with the practice. DeFranco also notes that Libras trying for a baby will have good luck this month. Spring is the time of birth, after all! Here’s what you’ll be like as a parent, based on your zodiac sign.

Scorpio (October 23-November 21)
Water sign Scorpio is the true definition of the saying “still waters run deep.” Independent and passionate, Scorpios living with partners, roommates, or their families might be chafing at being confined to a crowded home for so long during the pandemic. “Right now, your focus is on your daily routines in relation to the resources you share with your partner, which can have you feeling extra sensitive,” DeFranco says. Levitt agrees, recommending that frustrated Scorpios take time “for deep conversations, to reconnect with people to let them know you care and develop stronger emotional bonds.” As a time of balance, the spring equinox is a great time for Scorpios to temper their fierce feelings. “Use your capacity for depth and ability to understand your partner to strike a compromise in lieu of pointing out their flaws,” says DeFranco. “Disagreements are unavoidable, but the passion is stronger than ever. Split the difference and make a joint purchase that brings you both joy.” Sounds like Scorpio should look at this list of the perfect gift for every sign.
DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Create a sanctuary or a safe space at home to regain a sense of solitude.
Sagittarius (November 22-December 21)
Sagittarians are optimistic, fun-loving fire signs; they’re not afraid to step off the beaten path and forge their own road. “So time to travel,” says Levitt. ”Both COVID-19-safe local trips, and travels of the mind through reading and film for new study, education, and research.” As well as a time for new beginnings and learning new things, the spring equinox is a time of renewal, which applies to Sag’s relationships as well. “Relationships and love seem to be the only things that can permeate your feelings right now; it’s okay to be sensitive even if it feels foreign. If you start a fight don’t run away,” says DeFranco. “Allow yourself to place your feelings in the hands of another and trust them enough to let go.” Sagittarius lives to travel! DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Set a goal for learning something new and share it with the people you live with.
Capricorn (December 22-January 19)
Stoic, sensible Caps are the serious friend you go to when you need advice on your relationships, your career, and your budget. “Capricorn is an earth sign talented in business and career development,” Levitt explains. “So start this solar year by having your financial affairs in order. You can make plans to look for a better job, redo your resume, and start career networking.” If you like your current job, DeFranco recommends being proactive at work. “Take charge when you can. You’re in a position to feel more secure than ever, so don’t be afraid to ask for more—you’ve earned it!” she says. Capricorns also enjoy having a stable home environment, so spend some time nesting. Every zodiac sign has a career strength: find out yours.
DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Don’t be afraid to double up on your routines so that you feel structured and in control.
Aquarius (January 20-February 18)
As an air sign, Aquarius loves to talk, discuss, share, and communicate! Aquarians are the wacky independent rebels of the zodiac, but they have a strong internal code that they live by. The spring equinox is a great time to reflect on how that code is serving you. “Aquarius is one of the most principled signs, but consider how you might be holding certain values higher than they’re worth,” says DeFranco. “Reevaluate your present, based on new information you might find about your past.” Air signs love to make mental connections, and Levitt recommends that they embrace their natural impulses this spring. “Time to expand your circle, join groups, and explore new paths (even if mostly online due to COVID-19). Launch a community website!” she suggests. DeFranco agrees, explaining that “This equinox places focus on your immediate environment, locality, and perceptions. Feel like having fun? This is a great time to be creative and make art.” Everyone needs a best friend, but here’s the sign that you should be friends with.
DeFranco’s Spring Cleaning Tip: Calling an old friend can be a fun way to unwind.
Pisces (February 19-March 20)
The sensitive fish is in for change this spring equinox. The sun is moving out of Pisces and into Aries as the year-long cycle has ended. “It’s time to see yourself in a new light and safeguard yourself against anything that might bring you down,” DeFranco says. “You may be feeling some tenderness about your past, but don’t fret, because healing is already underway. Be gentle with yourself and others and empower yourself to release anything that makes you feel like a victim. Doing so can make you change how you express yourself to the world.” This water sign feels things deeply, and Levitt recommends the spring equinox as a time for self-care. “Establish clear boundaries with others to protect your sensitivity and allow the flow of your intuitive talent,” she says.
