You’d be surprised how much the weather affects your lips. Peak winter and summer are especially brutal times of year for my—and probably your—lips. The respective cold and hot air makes them dry, chapped and cracked. I know, it’s not a pretty picture. With so many options out there, it can be tough to choose among the best lip balms. However, I found the solution to curing my parched pout. I have a dedicated daytime chapstick, and then I apply the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask before bed as a leave-on overnight treatment.

What is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask?

Laneige is a Korean beauty brand—and one of the top-rated ones, at that. This $24 lip sleeping mask, as the name suggests, is designed to work its magic while you sleep.

It’s made with a Berry Fruit Complex, which is rich in antioxidants and helps to create supple-looking lips. Coconut oil, shea butter and seed butter provide nourishment and lasting moisture. Vitamin C protects from external aggressors, such as cold or dry weather and frequently licking your lips. It also uses an exclusive Moisture Wrap technology, which includes hyaluronic acid and minerals that form a protective film so moisture (and the active ingredients) are locked in as you sleep.

There are various scents and shades, although the product is more about the softening properties than what tint it gives your lips. Choose from Berry (the original), Gummy Bear, Sweet Candy, Vanilla, Mint Choco and more. Laneige also offers seasonal options, like Pumpkin Spice and Peppermint. It looks similar to a lip oil when applied, but works like a repairing lip balm.

Why is the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask so popular?

I’ve been using this season to upgrade my skincare routine, mainly in the hydration department. As I was choosing a new moisturizer and night cream, I knew my lips needed hydration help, too. This catapulted me down a rabbit hole of researching lip treatments. The same one kept popping up: the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask. It’s so popular, in fact, the K-beauty brand says one lip mask is bought every three seconds worldwide, based on global unit sales data from 2021.

I quickly discovered why this lip mask has such a cult following—it works! Both beauty veterans and amateurs alike flock to TikTok to share why they love the product. It’s because it combines an intensive treatment with a flattering shine that truly fights damaged lips.

Not only has TikTok been pining over the little jar of lip magic, but it’s a go-to for a slew of celebrities, including Kelly Ripa, Brooke Shields, Kendall Jenner, Zoe Saldaña, Kate Moss and Nina Dobrev. Many of these women say they use the mask throughout the day, which is your green light to snag an extra to keep in your bag. (Another mask treatment we love? The K18 hair mask.)

How we tested it

To try it out for myself, I made the lip mask (in the original Berry scent) the very last step in my nighttime skincare routine. I started by removing my makeup, washing my face and applying all my hydration-packed creams. Then I used the applicator (a tiny spatula, if you will), to put a generous amount on my lips. After some zzz’s, I woke up to smoother lips—after just one night of using it.

I’ve been using the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask for more than a month now, and I can’t imagine not using it before shutting my eyes. In fact, I keep the little jar and spatula next to my bed so there’s no way I’ll forget it. Initially, I was worried that as someone who loves to sleep on her stomach, I would wipe off the mask on my pillowcase or cooling blankets, completely negating its effects. But I can’t recall a morning when I’ve woken up and they haven’t felt hydrated. So, when the brand says it has a proprietary Moisture Wrap technology to lock in the good stuff, it wasn’t kidding.

The mask has a lip gloss look with a slight tint, so although it’s meant for nighttime, you can absolutely wear it during the day. I’d suggest applying a little less product and swiping it on with your finger for the perfect topper to any lipstick.

FAQs

Do you wipe off the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask?

Once you apply a generous amount of the thick lip balm, there’s no need to touch it. After you wake up the next morning, however, you can gently wipe off any excess if needed.

Can I use the Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask every night?

Yes, the brand doesn’t list any restrictions on how often you can use the product. As someone who is cautious about “intensive” treatments, I’ve never had an issue using the mask—even when I use it day and night. However, Laneige does have daytime-specific products, like the Lip Glowy Balm, which also provides a boost of hydration and a slight tint.

What other Amazon reviewers had to say

It’s clear people love this leave-on lip mask: It has more than 21,000 five-star reviews on Amazon. Here’s what real users had to say:

Five-star reviewer Alexa Jewell was suffering from chapped lips for months. “I’ve tried every single drugstore chapstick out there and nothing worked long term,” she writes. “I used this stuff for the first time yesterday afternoon and 24 hours later my lips are like night and day—a 100% improvement. I have no idea how but I’m sold. Definitely worth it if you’ve stumbled upon this because of dry, chapped lips.”

“I live in the desert and the dry climate made me buy this product,” writes satisfied customer Amanda L. “I apply it at night and when I wake up, my lips are always plump and soft. No more dry, cracked lips. The container lasts me about 8 months to a year and is totally worth the price.”

“I’ve been using this for about three weeks during the driest month of winter, and my lips haven’t had any of the normal dryness or cracking I have experienced in years past,” notes verified purchaser, E M. “I’m very impressed, a little goes a long way and the provided lip spatula is perfect for getting just a light amount. It makes me want to try more of their daytime lip products!”

Final verdict

When a viral product has a strong TikTok, celebrity and consumer following, there must be a reason why. In this case, it’s because it’s a beauty product that actually works. The intensive-care mask is designed to deliver hydration and moisture while you’re on your second REM cycle of the night, and it succeeds in every way. There’s something to be said about a product that allows you to swipe it on and forget about it. With just a few seconds worth of work on my end, I get to wake up feeling like I beat dehydration.

If the idea of spending $24 for a lip balm seems crazy to you, I can assure you a little goes a long way. I’ve been using it for more than a month, and have only used about one-eighth of it. There’s a reason the included spatula is so small—you don’t need much!
