This Month’s Pick

City Under One Roof

City Under One Roof by Iris Yamashita

In the remote Alaskan town of Point Mettier, a single high-rise houses the whole population—and possibly a killer. When a snowstorm blocks the only tunnel out of town, Anchorage-based detective Cara Kennedy digs into what may be a grisly murder.

Isolated in the same building as the 205 residents of the tiny town—most of whom treat her with frosty suspicion—Cara teams up with a local cop who’s eager to see the crime solved. The oddball residents all have something to hide. But then again, so does Cara.

This clever, claustrophobic mystery will grip you from the get-go and won’t let up until the final page. It’s a story saturated in tension and told by three distinct protagonists who you’ll have no trouble rooting for.

What we love:

  • The atmospheric setting
  • Its three compelling narrators
  • The twisty mystery and surprising ending
  • The cast of outsiders you can’t help but love

Books for Young Readers

Fostering a love of reading early in childhood is one of the best ways to turn your kids into lifelong book lovers. In fact, most adults can point to the children’s books that changed their lives. But so-called books for kids have a wider appeal—just ask all the grown-ups hooked on YA novels.
