30 Stores Open on New Year’s Day 2021

Plenty of big-name retailers and restaurants will be open on January 1, regardless of the federal holiday.

We’re all trying to stay home more this year, and sadly, that won’t change as soon as the new year arrives. But sometimes an emergency shopping trip is necessary, even on a holiday. Technically, New Year’s Day, which falls on a Friday in 2021, is a federal holiday, but there are plenty of stores that will be open.

Before you go shopping, you should probably check with your local location to ensure that that specific store is open. And if you choose to go into one of these stores open on New Year’s Day, please try to be courteous to those who have to work (especially if you don’t), and please wear a mask! Grocery stores open on New Year’s Day

Cumberland Farms: Most Cumberland Farms locations will be open.

Kroger: If you’re hoping to do some New Year’s Day grocery shopping, Kroger stores will be open as usual—but the hours depend on the store. Call your store to confirm whether they’re open 24 hours or from 6 a.m. until 1 p.m. Pharmacy hours will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Publix: Store hours vary on New Year’s Day, but Publix will be open. Most locations will be open until between 7 and 9 p.m.

Stop & Shop: Stores will be open during regular hours, with pharmacies open from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Whole Foods: Whole Foods locations will be open for “modified hours”—check your specific location for those hours.

Gas stations and convenience stores open on New Year’s Day

7-Eleven: New Year’s Day hours at 7-Eleven vary by location, but many of these convenience stores will be open for their normal 24 hours.

Circle K: Most Circle K locations will be open on January 1.

Dollar Tree: Many Dollar Tree locations will be open on New Year’s Day, though potentially with reduced hours.

Drugstores open on New Year’s Day

CVS: Most CVS locations will be open on New Year’s Day. They may have reduced hours, though, pharmacy hours in particular, so contact your local store.

Rite Aid: Most Rite Aid stores are among the stores open on New Year’s Day. They will be open regular hours.

Walgreens: Walgreens locations will be open on New Year’s Day, but hours will vary by location.

Other retailers open on New Year’s Day

Barnes & Noble: Didn’t get the books you wanted for the holidays? Most Barnes & Noble stores will open at 11 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

Home Depot: Head to Home Depot on New Year’s Day, after giving your store a call to check for reduced hours.

IKEA: Hoping to start the year right with a fresh look in your home? Head to IKEA, which will be open for normal business hours (10 a.m. to 9 p.m.)

Kohl’s: Kohl’s hasn’t announced its hours for this year, but last year it was open during regular business hours. Those hours vary by store.

Lowe’s: Most Lowe’s locations will be open on New Year’s Day, but check your specific location for reduced hours.

Macy’s: Macy’s will be open for regular business hours.

Marshall’s: You can head to Marshall’s from 10 a..m to 6 p.m. on New Year’s Day.

T.J. Maxx: T.J. Maxx operates on the same hours as Marshall’s, and both are stores open on New Year’s Day.

Target: Target hasn’t fully announced their hours yet, but they’re expected to be open normal hours, as they were last year.

Walmart: Walmart will be open during regular business hours, though you should still verify your local store’s hours. Just don’t look for these things Walmart won’t sell anymore.

Restaurants open on New Year’s Day

Chick-fil-A: They might be closed every Sunday, but most Chick-fil-A locations will be open on Friday, January 1. Hours may vary by location, though.

IHOP: IHOP will be open on New Year’s Day. Call your location for specific hours.

KFC: The franchisees will determine each individual KFC’s hours, but most of the locations will be open.

McDonald’s: Independently owned and operated, McDonald’s restaurant hours vary vastly. Check with your local McDonald’s to see if they’ll be open on New Year’s Day. And if you go to McDonald’s, avoid these “polite” habits that McDonald’s employees actually don’t like.

Panda Express: If you’ve got a hankering for Chinese food on New Year’s Day, you can go to Panda Express during normal operating hours.

Starbucks: Sure enough, you can get your Starbucks coffee fix on New Year’s Day. Your Starbucks will likely be open but check for any reduction of hours.
